If we replaced the word oil in this thread with beer...Budweiser and Ballast Point Sculpin will both get you there lol. If someone prefers Amsoil over Pennzoil to each his own.

I remember a number of years ago seeing independent comparison data sheets reports on synthetics, showing Amsoil to having better data than the others...I will see if I can find it again, but I feel ya...its easy to claim "Im the best" or otherwise paint yourself bigger and brighter than you are, but equally, to say its "standard "snake oil" sales tactic" with no data, is just a s bad.

Yes, this is Amsoils sheet, so take some of the text with a grain of salt, but there is most certaily information here that you could use to compare, specifically in the "Technical Properties" section.

Nobody is drinking motor oil so taste doesn't matter. Some would say that taste matters in beer. Your analogy is comparing apples to goats.

    Yup

Except if you are drinking Lucky Lager you probably won't enjoy the day as much as drinking Budweiser! Or if you paid 2x as much for the same beer as your buddies you might get poked fun of a bit.

I definitely don't mean to start the whole which synthetic is better argument because it is a bit subjective. To say there is anything special about Amsoil, that makes it worth twice as much as anything else, because Amsoil says it's special is pretty funny and the fact that people actually believe that shows the power of marketing over reality.

So you guys do this testing and change the oil in your Tacomas based off those recomendations?
How much mileage does that end up being?

Years ago won't matter to me. Pennzoil changed there formulation to a pure synthetic, by everyone's definition not just the Castrol court case definition, a couple of years ago after any data you have. They did so because it sets them apart to guys like me who realize what you start with when making motor oil matters.

Dude, whatever you use to justify the amount of money you are spending. To me you look like that guy claiming that Duracell batteries last longer because the commercial says so. Enjoy the koolaid. I'm just trying to show you that the hype you are believing is hot air and you could save a few bucks going another direction. Hey, you're the one who opened a thread asking for opinions. In my opinion, and a lot of other people who have changed oil for a long time, Amsoil oil is marketing BS.

I highly encourage you to spend some time on Bobistheoilguy forums. There is real third party information available there if you want a peak.

Didn't read all the responses but, I'd rather change my oil per Toyota spec (more often) than follow non manufacture specs.

I do my oil changes on Toyota spec and will do so until the warranty period is up. To use oil testing to extend the interval is perfectly legitimate when the truck is off warranty, but until then you should stay within the factory recommendations to avoid warranty issues.

Agree, if that's a guys preference.

I work in an industry that is always changing its maintenance program on its equipment based on operating conditions and test results. For me, it's just too easy to follow (in my case) the 10,000 mile interval. I put about 40k miles a year on the 4Runner...95% of which is interstate with a 120 mile commute. So, not a start and stop, short trip situation at all...otherwise, I may reconsider.

Found a wholesale distributor right down the road. I got a case (12 quarts) of Amsoil Signature 0w-20 for $92.85. thats about $7.74 per quart. Im all set now.

Whats the best price you have seen on a 5qt of the mobil 1. After toyotacare will be doing my own changes, just wondering what a steal vs average price would be for a 5qter.

Average is mid 20's, for a steal I've seen it go as low as 16. Only saw that once. (for 5qt)

I posted earlier in this thread an easy way to get 5qts below $24 and every few months for the past year or two Mobil 1 has had $12 rebate on this same 5qt jug making them about $12 or less each with a limit of 2 per address for each rebate period. They're not currently doing one but the last one just ended last month so if they follow the trend they created there will be another one soon enough. Super easy rebate as you don't need to cut UPC or anything like that. Then, the $12 checks show up (usually in 2's and 4's depending on if you use a work address or whatever) a couple months later like clockwork. Every time the rebate comes up I start a watch on Camelx3 and then wait until they price match Walmart. Two days later I've got oil on my front porch and some envelopes to stamp and mail off.

I have not in the Tacoma, it's under warranty so no need. I comply with the warranty requirements. I doubt I will when it comes off warranty, because it will still have less than 20k on it, so I'll just move to a 10k OCI and do the lab work at about 50k.

Based on other experience (healthy motor, M1) I'd expect the results to show the oil would be good for 14-15k. As mentioned before, I change at 10. Easy to remember, head room for error or intermittent differentiation in driving style.

I'm with you , this is the second place that I read on TW that keep away from Mobil-1 since is not full synthetic...it's a BLEND!!!!. At Walmart find FULL SYNTHETIC 5Q gallon for 17.81 brand SUPERTECH as good as amsoil or any other since passed the API standards.US$3.99 OEM any filter with the ring seal Toyota of Plano Dealer. Also a waltmart full synthetic Valvoline ATF x5 gallons...regarding using the genuine Toyota Filter they tested... better performance than any other expensive filter... go for the OEM.
I will change that oil every time that TAXES and inspection gets together next time due ( 10/2016 )

Here it is the data that SuperTech is API certified \ passed standards.
