Just to be clear - those prices are *already* wrecking yard prices. New prices from dealer - the transfer case alone is over $3K.

This is why most folks will say the best course is to have a "donor truck" sitting next to yours, from which you can pull all the needed parts. That way, nothing turns out to be missing, and you don't need to make extra back-and-forth trips for various small parts that got left behind but turn out to be necessary.

Final word: more trouble than it's worth.

Forgive the necro... But starting another fucking prerunner to 4x4 thread will prob make me a walking target...

Selling my truck is not an option. I've invested too much into it and it has been too reliable for me to take chances on another one that may be a POS. Also I can't get a Double Cab Off Road with a Long Bed, and I need lockers.

I'm thinking on doing the conversion and I have done some numbers, and I don't think it'll be too bad.

    My questions however are:

I want to use a FJ Manual Case. There are tons of wrecked FJs here, so thats a plus. What mods will I have to do by using the Manual case vs the Electric case. Apart from cutting, will the 4x4 computer that gets installed take case of knowing whats happening where and turn the right indicator lights on? Or will I have problems setting up the 4x4 hi/lo indicator signs and such.

This will be coupled with ARB lockers BTW. Since I am already using OBA for AirBags, might as well use it for the lockers I want. :D

I'm not trying to create a "beast" with SAS and all that because I do not need it, however I do find myself needing 4x4 and lockers.

I have a relative list of the parts and that looks ok on paper. Installing should not be too hard, I'm just worried about electrical stuff.

there is a bigger headache with the newer tacoma for a 4wd conversion.
the 1st gen tacomas are relatively not as complicated as compared to a 2nd with all the electronics and such

ill probably end up 4wd swapping 1st gen when im outta college and its not my DD

I had to post to this zombie thread lol. Yes, it can be done, but if you're not going to SAS your truck, then don't bother with it. Trade it in for a 4x4, much less hassle and time. You could be enjoying a 4x4 faster than you can find the parts and do the swap.

Anything can be done with enough money. Anything. Look at Jay Leno's garage. Guy has bikes and cars powered by GE Turbine engines.

Because you are asking how much it costs, that tells me you are likely a poor candidate for this project.

It's not that hard, I do have my conversion crossmember sitting around it would make things easier. Find a good trany and tcase. Fronts end all bolt in easy peasy, just sourcing every bolt and nut takes a bit of work. It could be done for less then $3k if get the right deal on parts.

I'm almost done converting my 2 gen. I even used the electronic shift t-case. I finally got the wiring figured out for the t-case and front diff. Let me know if you need info. I've spent the last year figuring out all the details.

Edit: I didn't use the 4x4 ECU. All wiring and controls is done with relay logic. Simple and reliable. I will eventually post the wiring diagrams after I have time to test it all.

I'm curious if the transmissions are the same between the 2wd and 4x4. :drevil:

I helped a buddy convert a couple Ford vans to 4x4 years ago. Apples and oranges as far the conversion, but it's a LOT of work no matter the iron.

Lots of little things will not go as planned. It will never be as tight as a truck from the factory unless you're already a bad-ass mechanic or hire one at considerable cost. I vote trade it in.

Great troll for a lazy Thursday evening :anonymous:

The transmissions are similar but not the same. The 4-speed auto in the 2.7L needed the output shaft, speed sensor rotor and tail housing swapped. I believe the 5-speed auto in the 4.0L needs similar changes. It's way easier to just get a donor trans and bolt it up. I chose the hard route because I wanted to keep my transmission. It was low mileage and I knew it's history. In the end it cost me the same as buying a donor but was more work to do the conversion. Most of the conversions I've seen on 4.0L have done a straight swap of the transmission.

The hardest part of the conversion is finding all the parts. Mechanically the conversion isn't too bad. With a couple knowledgeable buddies and a decent garage to work in, it's pretty easy. I did the majority of my conversion by myself, laying in my driveway (which is a damn wind tunnel) in the middle of January. I just recently figured out how to wire up the transfer case to shift without the 4wd ECU.
