Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
The new Tacoma is going to kick ass, 'nuff said. Pretty soon all you haters will be drooling over it once people buy them and start modding them to the high heavens and make them cooler than your 2nd gen.

They should have just used the 4.0 out of the 4runner. 270hp/278tq. The only reason I could think they went with the 3.5 is because they have other engine options that will be released a year or so later

With 2.8L duramax Colorado 30+ mpg, 2.8L Cummins Frontier coming I can see newly developed 2.8L D4D offered in the future. Sweers said they wont but if Chevy and Nissan start selling enough Diesels they might be forced to compete.

Not that I would need a diesel but a cool alternative nevertheless

    Not
Not simply CAFE, more importantly customers want better mpg.

Truth. I am a sucker for more power like everyone else, but it is so easy to peel out in a truck (even a Gen 1 with 190hp) that only so much extra is usable. At the point it matters you are probably towing something substansive...which probably isn't the majority of folks on a daily basis. Point being, if Toyota chooses 270hp/261ftlbs, I wager that the instrumented tests verus the Chevy/GMC and Nissan will go "fine", though they may not win them all. But, it will likely be very efficient (mpg) with an excellent power profile. Just betting a beer to myself.

Bottom line: by not playing the numbers game (comparing max power), they avoid the silly "mine is bigger than yours" b.s., and focus on designing and producing a truck that is well-suited to it's intended purpose and needs, not the whimsical desires of the outsiders on the bell curve. As such a 3.5L with excellent mpg may meet more customer needs than a larger, less efficient engine.

A great example is the FR-S/BRZ. 200hp? Could use more? Sure. But it is enough and perfect for it's purpose. Hence all the accolades.

Yep, 270 is plenty of horsepower for a Tacoma. If you want more, buy a bigger truck that warrants the extra power. Or a sports car.
My 190hp in my 04 is more than adequate it pulls it down the highway at a brisk rate, and passes big trucks like nothing. People need to quit bitching already, not exactly going to change anything with Toyota's decision.

So if the new Tacoma has more HP but less torque, is it more or less powerful than the current 4.0 generally speaking?

I wouldn't disagree, but what about the increase in HP? Why do we have two ratings for power? Not trying to debate or anything, I am just genuinely curious.

Torque is not a power rating. Power is the rate at which you can do work (and torque is work).

HP is simply a math formula derived from Torque.

yep...the new engine will be fine...they never played the numbers game pissing match with the other manufactures...at least in the Tacoma, though it is kinda lame that it never got the dual VVT-i like in the 4Runner and FJ.

It's Two Thousand fucking Fifteen for christ sake... :D :p I still want my 30 mpg Tacoma...here we are 35 or so years later...and have gone backwards.

did not break any land speed records that is for sure... :D

though the gas Toyota 20R wasn't much better, 122 ft/lbs and 95 hp.

turbo would help with that oil burner, non turbo diesels are dogs

While not a power house, I would be content with the current 2.5 D-4D, down on hp compared to our 3.4's however more torque and available at a lower rpm we have 220@3600 the 2.5 is 253@2800...normal daily driving I tend to shift and hold rpm around 2000-2200...it would be perfect.
