It's been used aftermarket in other cars. This will be the first time it'll tie into Entune, but it's been used as the Scout app through Telenav GPS devices according to everything I just read in the article.

guess this is Toyota's stop gap measure for not implementing Android Auto and Car Play.

So it looks like it will not cost anything for a subscription to it, which means that you will get continued updated without having to pay Toyota to upgrade to there latest version. It will use your data plan though from your phone carrier. Did I get that right?

Why does anyone want a GPS built into their car these days? It's on everyone's phones, which cost less and are portable

Because not everyone wants to hold their phone in their hand while they drive, or have to look down at their phone. It's so much easier just being able to look at the touch screen. And your phone speakers are only so loud. I love my nav system in my Taco, helps me get to a lot of places. When I had my 97 Jeep XJ I had to use my phone, and that sucked. Especially when those things are like tin cans on the highway, you can't hear anything and there is no hiding from the road noise. You can even program your home address so whenever I'm somewhere that I don't know how to get back to the highway I just hit the "go home button" and then it'll guide me. Just really convenient. I haven't lived in Alaska but 4 years so I don't know each and every road, and I never will.

I hope the new system will allow you to enter addresses while the vehicle is in motion. Not like I'm selling my '15 anytime soon, but still.

I've always used my phone for a GPS because I have never had a Nav system.

I do like having Nav now, but the Toyota system in the Tacoma is very very very slow to program and won't let you program unless completely stopped. Which is annoying because sometimes when your lost you don't have time to program it.

It also doesn't recognize cross streets, which is usually how my work gives us job addresses.

It is great when it works, but sometimes I wonder why they wouldn't use the simplicity of a phone for entering data.

No lie, sometimes programming my entune GPS takes 3-5 minutes!

I have an auxiliary line going into my stereo. I plug phone in with Google navigational and Pandora running at the same time. The directions quiet the music and come through my stereo. Boom.

    - No its not. I don't have a smart phone Iphone. My cell phone is just a flip phone for phone calls. It does not have GPS NAV capability.

I do use a Garmin gps that works well. It is one less thing to mount , if I go with indash nav.

Sorry Im a loyal apple fanboy, this platform clearly looks substandard compared to android's, google's and apple's platforms. All because Toyota dosent want to pay for them, etc. They may lose some sales in the future if these take off especially in the yuppie type area (no offense). Soccer moms who are drunk on apple products will want the car/van/suv that has apple play.

WTF you mean? Apple maps is dreadful. I only use Google Maps on my iPhone, not Apple maps, and even it isn't always right. Since reading this article and ordering my 2016 with all the whistles and bells, I downloaded the Scout GPS app and have been playing with it. Not bad, but it ties heavily into social media. Not sure how I feel about that. It's pretty intuitive, and not any better or worse than my Tom Tom, and much better than my first gen Garmin.

I can see if I was meeting up with a group that this would be great - it tracks all the people in your party. Folks on a large meet or off-roading would have full situational awareness of the team. Nice. Just like the C4I situational battlefield & airfield displays.

Depending on whatever updates go into the Entune version, this could be a pretty sweet GPS.

Like others that have chimed in, I sometimes appreciate the larger screen which is less distracting. However; what I like most is that I can make my 2 teenagers use it and turn their phones OFF! This is a huge safety issue and now that I make them do it they make me do it. What I wish is that these systems were all easy to send an address to via bluetooth or something. Hand entering on any of them is a PITA.

I prefer my Garmin Nuvi on the dash.

    Works great.

    Updates are free and easy.

I can move it to another non GPS vehicle with 2 minutes of work.

I can take it on trips where I fly to, stick it in a rental car and go.

I don't require a signal like a phone to work. Meaning remote areas work.

If it eventually breaks or becomes unsupported, I buy another. Cheap.

    For the 'built in' fans.................

Ever had one fail out of warranty? What's the replacement cost?

Is there a cost to have maps updated?

Can you DIY, or is it dealer only?

Is there a commitment on how long the particular technology in use will be supported by the software vendor?

Built in is pretty and cool. So my question is for the long term owner is it going to really work out? Will it be up and running accurately 15 years from now?

    - Will the Telenav gps system work without a smart phone?
    - Will the gps work in areas that lack cell coverage?

Hopefully the installed gps can be used without a smart phone and no charges for service. It it doesn't , then keeping with Garmin or other stand alone gps will be more pratical.

All automotive GPS units don't need any external connections because they use the built-in satellite antenna to triangulate position. The smartphone connection is needed for the social media tie-in and traffic overlays. I'm not sure how it's going to work with Entune, but I think it's still going to be voice-interactive.

I do like the way the current Scout app presents turn directions; much better than the nav in my wife's 2013 Prius and father-in-law's 2012 Highlander Limited. I hope that translates to the in-dash unit, because I hate have to look at the screen when I need to be paying attention to the road.
