Tap your muffler and see if the packing in it is bouncing around. Happened on a Magnaflow of mine.

I'll see. I replaced muffler with stock and still get it. Went to nothing buy y for a few revs and couldn't here it. Put new gasket between magnaflow and y and still get sound again. Has me suspicious of a heat shield. I called urd and he wanted me to check gaskets with a listening hose. Passenger side and y needed tightening but didn't fix noise. At least header gaskets don't leak.

Could be the heat shields, or could also be the support brackets, which come off of the transmission and bolt ot the header flanges. Try tapping the exhaust in different areas with your palm.

Hey, it isn't the heat shields or anything in the muffler. I even broke down and took it to a well respected local muffler shop. They could not find the problem either (no leaks or bad muffler/vibrating heat shields, etc.). Anyhow, their solution was to weld in a resonator behind the y-pipe in the catback. This cut down that chatter quite a bit, but did not completely eliminate it.

So far, URD has admitted to me that their spec-u system can have resonance issues with a tacoma around 2200 rpm. They suggested their MKIII muffler, but have thus far refused to flat out tell me that it will fix the noise (I actually offered to purchase it a week ago if it would fix the problem and haven't heard from them since). Friday, I am going to a different exhaust shop to get a 2nd opinion, and possibly larger resonator. I'll keep you posted if I remember.

Just bought it last week, just tinted the windows and added the paint protection for hood and front bumper. Installed weather tech digital floormats, the rearview mirror extender (from this site), an Optima battery with custom tray, TRD oil cap, rad cap, TRD supercharger!!! Ya!!! Just this week $3710.00 plus $690.00 installed in El Paso, TX at Hoy Fox Lexus Dealership, TRD exhaust, Airaid cold air intake waiting in box in garage, Amsoil Dual Filter remote with 42 Design Oil catch can still to install. Need advice on URD Y-Pipe???? Have URD Welbro fuel pump to install also but want help. Have to sell the mid-mount light bar from (Pelly off this site) never opened it, still in box, but decided to go a different route $100.00 takes it plus shipping in USA.
Anyone know of a date for sale to public?
I've been watching for awhile but URD site says not for
    2012+ tacomas yet.

OK, so URD refused to offer to buy back their MKIII muffler system if it did not resolve the crinkling foil rasp that their spec-u headers and y-pipe cause between 2 and 2500 rpm. Well like I said I would do, I got a newer larger resonator welded in today. I think the muffler shop did a trashy job because they used a piece of galvanized pipe even though I told the bastards it was stainless. Oh well, the sound is like night and day, and it beats the heck out of giving $500 bucks to URD for a muffler they won't even stand by. I have pretty much eliminated the rasp except for above 3500 RPM (where I never drive at anyhow).

Just so everybody knows- this is the URD Spec-U Headers, URD 4x4 Y-Pipe, Magnaflow Offroad Pro Series exhaust, and Vibrant 2.5" Ultra Quite resonator. It sounds great. No more crackling potato chip noises. Quite a bit more power according to my butt-dyno.

oh well- If I wanted exhaust for looks I wouldn't have it dump out before the rear tire. Still pissed off at the chop job though.

im looking to get long tube headers but i live in a place that requires emissions testing.... but when i first took it in the shop had a computer that plugged in the dash instead of actually checking the exhaust. should i be able to get away with it having the o2 sims as there wont be any CEL?

That sounds fancy, but mainly fixing the crappy looking weld job on my resonator which was so lovingly referred to as 'jenga.'

I have my UDR headers sitting in my shop. Going to try and get them installed soon. I did get the udr ypipe installed and I have they same sound as stated above. So going to try and do they same thing by adding a large resonator after ypipe.
With the headers on that rasp would be so anoying

I only have a rasp at the higher RPM's when I'm punching it. stock headers though still. DTST's sittin' in the garage for the time being...I keep thinking about selling them for the Spec U headers and having the Total Chaos Coil Bucket gussets adjusted to fit around the headers....but we'll see....I'd really rather keep the coil strengthening vs 10-15 hp gain over short tube headers...

For the people with LT headers, how are you passing emissions sniffer tests? (if you have that where you live)
