2GR-FKS Engine Oil Filter

Has anyone seen enough of the new engine to know if the Oil Filter is on top of, or beneath the engine? Also, is it a spin-on disposable, or a replaceable paper cartridge type?

If this has already been addressed, I apologize, but I can't seem to find it.

Cartridge filter on the bottom like the new 4runners.

Yes, it is on the bottom of the engine, and is a cartridge type like the Dual VVT-i 1GR-FE in the 2010+ FJ Cruiser and 4Runner.

It is however the smaller filter used on the 2GR-FE and not the larger filter used on the 1GR-FE or 2GR-FSE.

I really wish they didn't put it underneath. Removing the skid plate sucks on the 4runner and assume they didn't design the Tacoma any better. Tundras you can get to when they have plow frames on and have to take out the cross bar to get at it.

 

Yuck! Is it really a cartridge filter, not a canister?



Any drain bolt, or does the oil just come out all at once, like a Tundra, and splatter everywhere?

 

On my in-laws highlander there is a drain hole to let the oil out, then you take off the actual filter housing.

 

My wife has a 2010 4runner and it is a pain in the ass to change the filter out. Its easy to get to but the process of removing the drain insert thing, letting it drain, and then removing the filter cover to only to have a large amount of oil spill out all over your arm and the skids. It's very messy because if you don't want to have oil dripping from your skid plates for the next week you have to get in there and wipe it all up.

 

It has a drain plug.

Find a 2006..2011 Civic SI (the one with the 2.0lt DOCH engine and 6speed manual).

Do an oil change.

I will assure you that it will be a selling point after that experience.

 

Those guys at Jiffy Lube should be able to figure it out... Just take it there

 

I don't trust any of them.

Worked in that field for many years, I have my own reasons to avoid them.

 

Yeah, they'll just bang on the frame a few times to make you think they changed the filter. I never get the local lube place to change anything but they've been caught a few times leaving the old filters on and just changing the oil.

 

Dealers are not that much better. Best is to do own oil changes. On 2Gen truck those are uber easy. ON cars with cartridge at the bottom, and a need to remove skid plate are unnecessary cumbersome.

I know and it works great for draining 25% of the oil out of the filter case. The other 75% however, drains out all over the place.

I hope it is easier to change than my 2012 4Runner was, that was a real PITA with the cartridge filter under the front end.

It will complicate the design of skid plates (as it does on 5th gen 4Runner). I agree with the comment that the filter location on top front of the 1GR is ideal.

 

This seems like it is screaming for an aftermarket solution ... any known solutions for the other motors with this style of filter? Also, why do this as opposed to cartridge type?

Did the first oil change. Honda did them after that.

Neighbor got a new engine in his taco thanks to someone not tightening a drain plug.
