Besides the tires, wheels, leather, home-link, and minor cosmetics (chrome)..

    What is different?

Suspension? Gearing? Rear Differential? Etc? Please post specifics if you have them. I'm trying to decide between a loaded Off-Road vs a Limited.

If you have to ask, get the limited if you want the smaller size Toyota pick up. It doesn't sound like you are hard core off road. With the off road, you get many extra features that will sit idle and un used. You can always appreciate the sun roof, the leather, the climate control etc. These are items that you can use daily. The limited is still one heck of an off road vehicle but really, it's too expnsive to beat up. I live in the woods in Maine and have an off road and I drive skidder trails with regularity.....I have yet to really Need the locking differential.

Don't take it personally. The off road has a plethora of features including crawl control, locking differential that completely differers from intent from the Lmited. You will never use this stuff if you don't go terrible places. If you do with regularity, you should be up on this stuff. Sounds like you just got offended after this first statement and hung up. And didn't bother reading anymore.

All Toyota Tacoma 4wd are excellent off road. But, If you were really hard core, seriously, you would you be aware of the difference. Not being a wise guy, just stating facts. The features on the limited, are daily use luxury items. If you don't plan to beat your truck up, why would you get an off road. If you do plan on taking it off road a lot, why would you get a limited. I live in a rough area and I would not beat up a $40k limited. Do you want honesty, cause otherwise, just get on line with a dealer and ask for the option sheets for each.

What's the difference between a locking differential and the 4WD LOW selector on the dash? I know what the locking diff does, and assumed the 4x4 LOW was the locking diff.

Could someone explain the difference in the two rear differentials and what that translates to? Is the gearing also going to be different? Does this mean the performance will be different?

A locking diff is a HUGE benefit off road, for a number of scenarios. Locking diffs physically lock your rear wheels into one solid axle, turning at the same speed. This prevents independent wheel spin-out, where the diff sends power to the wheel that is spinning faster (like it would when the car is turning and the outside wheel needs more revolutions). A "limited slip" is a poor-man locker, soft of, where vehicle limits the amount of spin out. But nothing beats a locker. I wish they offered one in the front too.

I think he tried to help you.....I would not buy the Limited and take it off roading. It's a "luxury model" People don't want "arizona pinstriping" on that expensive a vehicle. Limiteds are for guys like me. who don't go mudding or rock crawling but want a vehicle that may be better in the snow (should we ever find it) or launching a boat on a slippery ramp.

4Low is gearing...... All 4WD models have both 4HI and 4Lo. Has nothing to do with the differentials. It happens all inside the transfer case.

Without trying to explain it scientifically.... when you put the truck in 4Lo, you'll notice the RPM's will climb much quicker and the truck won't move nearly as far or fast. Max speed is probably around 35mph in 6th gear / Auto. Even at that speed, the rpm's will be screamin.

A Brief Lesson in Off Road Vocabulary

4×4 High: All-purpose four wheel drive mode used in most cases. As opposed to 2 wheel drive, all four wheels are engaged and powered by the powertrain. “High” refers to the gear ratio, meaning that the gear ratio is unchanged from the ratio used in 2 wheel drive.

4Ă—4 Low: Four wheel drive mode where a lower gear ratio is engaged, thus delivering higher torque to the wheels and lowering maximum speed. Useful in slower off road situations, rock crawling, and for getting unstuck when things go south.

Locking Differential: Also known as “diff lock,” this refers to the speed at which the wheels turn. In most standard 4×4 modes, the wheels spin at different speeds to compensate for loose or uneven terrain. When the differential is locked, wheels all move at the same speed. A tool used in advanced off-roading and for getting unstuck.

I'll also add to what others have said. The reason why 4 LOW is desirable is largely because in regular 1st gear once you crank up to around 3k rpms you're cruising along at 15mph or so. Off road this is way too fast in many cases and you'll be bouncing along all over the place out of control. This is especially problematic on inclines where you need some momentum and you want to be in the engines power band but not going too fast. Once in 4low you can be at 2500 rpms and going like 5 mph. You can kind of get away without low range by really heating up your auto transmission/clutch but that is a pretty terrible idea if you're out on a trail.

I know there is some negativity out there, but not trying to be like that. Would like to offer help in the dorm of using the search button. 1st gen and 2nd gen forum alone would give you more than enough info on the topic and answers you seek.

    Limited
    Leather softer
    Homelink
    More chrome
    No longbed available
No locker, but not many vehicles have a stock locker.
Leather accents on dash and doors
18 inch wheels for proper all crawls
Suspension tuned for highway (I could be wrong)

    Off road
    Black fender flares
    Longbed available (2016 only)
    Stock locker
16 inch wheels and more agressive tires
Cloth seats (can get with heaters)
    Crawl control
