Anyone seen or heard of any reviews on the new 6 speed manual transmission?

    Thanks

No it seems the recent Toyota press demo only had automatic models.

At the end of this TFLtruck video mike sweers talks about the manual a little bit. Not a review but it's the only thing i've heard anyone say about it so far. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FutBBbglZvo

Mike S. said that he favors manual transmissions and that this new tranny feels great. "It's no longer a stick in a bucket of stones". I found this encouraging since I'm strongly considering the manual myself.

I'm considering one if the new Tacoma suffers from the same kind of crummy shifting as the Colorado and Canyon in the automatics: shifting as fast as possible for better economy, ignoring what the driver wants via the pedal.

A little of this and a little of that.
Thanks for posting this video. Encouraging words about the new six-speed manual trans. I'm glad it's still available on these trucks!

The autoguide reviewer specifically said the transmission downshifts quickly. he says in the video that the transmission doesn't seem concerned abot fuel economy and later says it feels as powerful as the colorado despite having less hp because it downshifts so readily. http://www.autoguide.com/manufacturer/toyota/2016-toyota-tacoma-review

That is reassuring, tubesock. I hope that I find that when I go for a test drive. Otherwise...manual it is.

I agree. The torque numbers are similar which affects driving up to high speed, so they should "feel" the same. Besides, all that extra horse power and torque comes on 4 to 500 hundred rpm higher in the Colorado so in practical terms they should be similar in the actual driving range. If Toyota wanted 10 to 20 more HP, all they would have to do is not limit the max rpm......they could have very similar numbers at the expense of reliability. The numbers are more important to GM I guess but the driver will almost never realize the difference. Besides, the Taco is significantly lighter and I would not be surprised if it accelerated quicker.

The zero to sixty numbers of the old 4.0L are similar ( within a couple tenths) of the Colorado with the Taco having a five speed. If it had a six speed, it could be similar...torque is still the same and Toyota makes grea ttransmissions.

Yeah, the engine performance is probably very similar, except for the red line. I haven't seen the 2GR's torque curve, but it's probably flat like the LFX. The new tacoma has gotten pretty chunky so there isn't all that much difference in curb weight any more. On paper the final drive ratios end up basically the same. I wouldn't be surprised if they end up with nearly identical acceleration.

Back on topic, I am looking forward to hearing more about the MT and driving one myself at some point. That little snippet from Sweers about them paying attention to smooth shifting and positive engagement is nice to hear. They didn't just shove some transmission out of their parts bin in there.

Interesting comments about carbon syncros in the new 6MT. That is usually a feature targeted at smooth shifting but also can require thinner gear oil. Also allegedly better for high rpm shifting.

That's why I think Sweer did alright to hit the targets this new Tacoma need to reach, where they count, despite the strong hate TWers here have for him.

I'm sure if it's not Sweer but someone else in charge who didn't care for manual transmission, we might not see a manual Tacoma ever again.

Exactly, they went out of their way to keep and produce a 6-speed manual for the Tacoma.

If powers are similar between 2 trucks, I can always beat the other truck off the line with the manual, if the other truck is auto.

I can't wait to test drive these new Tacomas.

Just for comparison sake, the 2GR-FKS in the 2016 Lexus GS 350 will make 311hp with 91 octane fuel.
