I use the RAM mount on my Bird Dawg Industries mirror riser.

 

I've got 3 GoPro Hero 3+Black Editions. There wasn't enough change in the 4 to make me want to change. I highly recommend getting the windshield suction mount. I've got mounts on each side of the bed and mounts under the truck in different places. One on the rack on the back also.

 

There's many off brands that mimic GoPro's, but GoPro in my opinion controls the market. Sony's Action Cam is right behind.

 

I've had very good luck out of them. Video quality is great and there are a lot of options you can use. I recommend the Black edition because it comes with a wifi remote that will remotely operate the camera. You can also use your phone with the GoPro app and see what you are recording in real time. That has been hit or miss with me though. The free editing software is not bad at all. I'm sure there are much better options out there but for free it is actually really good.

As far as accessories go... you can get pretty much anything you need with GoPro. I'm glad that I have them.

 

The 4 is honestly an updated Hero 3 without many benefits besides the 4k capabilities. (Which really aren't that great ATM.) You would be happy with the 3 unless you want the best of the best. It's kind of like Apple at their (iPhone 5 vs iPhone 5s) comparisons.

 

If you get the "rear view mirror lift plate" (search the forums) it makes an awesome place for the sticky base mount. I used it.

 

SJCAM SJ4000 - uses all of the GroPro accessories and less than $75 (and it comes with a ton of mounts). Video quality is comparable to the Hero, 1080px30fps.

 

Correct ... The plate leaves just enough space for the flat sticky base to adhere to. Works like a champ for a "dash cam" view.

I have a RAM ball on my driver side fwd roof rack mounting hole, but looks like you have a roof rack.
An A-pillar RAM ball could be an option too.

I went with the Sony Action Cam. At the $150 price point, the Sony has HD picture with the features of the Go Pro but also has a removable rechargeable battery and is compact and less obvious inside the cabin. I got 2 rechargeable batteries with charger for $17.99 on Amazon. Each battery lasts about 2 hours. I have a 64 gig microcard and can easily replay or download on my laptop. I have been using the Sony since May and have been very pleased with its performance as a dash cam. Below is where I mount it in my cabin. It also comes with a water tight case like the Go Pro.

 

Being mounted on the visor, does this introduce shaking on the videos?

 

The camera has an anti shake software so all of my videos have been steady. I havn't noticed the camera shaking that much.

 

I looked at the Sony when I was looking for a camera but decided against it. As it stands right now GoPro has the market cornered with their products. Most everything from drones to numerous other applications are made for the GoPro. Everything you said the Sony does the GoPro does (albeit at a higher cost). I also have 12 rechargeable batteries that lasts for over a hour recording at 1080P 60fps and a charger that I keep them charged in the truck. So running out of batteries is never a problem. Wasabi Power batteries are cheap and I'm not so sure they aren't better than the GoPro batteries. That said I've never had a issue with any of my cameras (yet) and the video is amazing. Since I've added the front bumper I've added mounts underneath so I can get video of the suspension working also. The Sony (to me) just didn't have as many applications as the GoPro but that's just my opinion.

I used to have one mounted on my dash for a dash cam and it worked perfectly but ended up removing it and going with a dedicated dash cam.









The suction mount is amazing. Once it's on you can literally rock the truck with it.

When I looked at the go pro, the model at the $150 price point did not have a removable battery. I needed to spend $299 for that feature on a Go Pro. That was at Best Buy last May unless the Go Pro models have changed since then. The Sony has an accessory that has a small LED screen you can wear like a wrist watch which communicate with the camera thru blue tooth. It can also communicate with your smartphone. Again, it has the features of the Go Pro at half the price.
