I got the reinforcement plate in today and I installed it. Two words come to mind.. FUCKING AWESOME!!!! This product is great man. Thanks again for working with me brother. I will post picks of mine tomorrow. I have to call the dealership and get the part number for the smaller screws for the top of it so they are flush. Unless someone on here has the part number? I didn't want to search through the 41 pages for it. Thanks you guys...

I have to ask. Has anyone stress tested this with video? Say loading a quad or sled type of thing?

    Thanks

I just got mine yesterday, but it is A LOT better than the stock tailgate. I also ordered my 7 screws from the dealership today. they should be here by tuesday.. I can't wait, then this project will be complete. On to the next one.

Got mine in from Relentless about a week or so ago, and just got around to putting it on. Mine arrived with no damage, despite UPS' best efforts. ;) I'm in NC, and Relentless is in NV, so you kinda expect that for something shipped all the way across the country. The box was torn and beat all to hell, but the tailgate was well packed, and the powder coating was undamaged. This really is a well made product, and the powder coating was very well done - I was very pleased.

Installation was very easy - took 20 mins of prep, and 2 minutes to actually do. Unbolted and popped the old cover off, cleaned and waxed the top edge of the tailgate. Sure enough, pretty flimsy in there. I got the powder coated aluminum, and it was formed correctly, tight in the middle as others noted, but I used 1/4" foam tape on the top and front edge and it compressed nicely. Slid on with no damage. I also used a ton of quick detailer spray as a protectant/lubricant.

I did put 2 layers of painters tape where the edge meets the paint, but think that was probably unnecessary if you are careful. Screw holes lined up exactly, and I did reinstall the factory cover again. Interestingly enough, on my 2015, the cover had no tabs to remove/file down - it just went back on top of the reinforcement. Only needed the Dremel tool to cut down the rubber bumpers. I bought the 7 screws needed to lay flush from Toyota of Dallas - TRDParts4U. The part # shows as being for a Land Cruiser fender liner on their site, but it is indeed correct. Part # 90166-60003. The shipping cost was twice what the screws cost - think they were 68 cents each.

If you are on the fence about this (I wasn't sure if I really needed it), get it! The peace of mind is worth it. I don't use my truck for work day to day, but I do use it like a truck, hauling fairly heavy and dirty stuff - lumber, dirt, mulch, gravel, etc. I don't have a trailer, so everything goes in the bed. I was scared of busting my own tailgate climbing on it, and I'm not that big, 200 lbs give or take. Brother in law is 6'5" and 300 lbs, he'll be the real test!

Eric, congrats on getting married, and thanks again - great product and I know I'll get a ton of use out of it. My daughter is still playing with the styrofoam packing inserts, too. Added bonus right there.

Havent seen a video, but a quad is no issue. I previously owned an 07 Tacoma which led me to make these after I bent my tailgate the first month I had the truck.... used it heavily as a 'truck' for the next 4 years and the tailgate was never an issue after that. Quads, brush mowers, logs and firewood, lumber, motorcycles etc etc.

Never loaded a quad, but I have had over 500 lbs sitting on my tailgate and had no issues, or worry.

Same here, not worried at all to sit on or load it. Myself, my wife, my daughter and a couple neighbor kids hang out on the back of it.

    Definitely worth it and recommended.

    Looks good, guys!

Finishing another batch of plates for current orders and then there should be a few leftover bare metal in stock, both steel and aluminum(smooth)

Just an FYI for those ordering the flush screws (90166-60003). Most places the shipping will be much more than the screws. I found that toyotapart.com offers First Class Mail shipping for small orders like this and it is just $4 shipping and $0.71 per screw.

Just installed mine, aluminum and coated. Was actually from an April group buy but it took until now for me to be with my truck to install it! Anyway, install was pretty smooth but I honestly couldn't see how I would slide it on from the top without some serious scraping or deformation. So instead I slid it on from the side. This involved removing the tailgate cable from one side, tipping the tailgate up just a little and letting the bottom of the cover slide in the gap under the tail light. No idea if that was the right way to do it, but it worked for me at least.

As others have mentioned the cover is tightest at the middle with the lip practically making contact. I put some weather strip foam on the tailgate near the lip to prevent rubbing, but I put it a little too high on the tailgate so I think I'm still risking a little bit of contact at the middle. I might give it another try later. Right now I have the original plastic cover off, debating putting it on top of the Relentless cover as others have done.

Anyway, looks like an awesome product so far. Glad I jumped on the great group buy back in April.

Oh, and congrats to Eric on his wedding!

Most likely would affect it as the reinforcement completely changes the top profile of the tailgate.

Guys, what are these "flush" screws you are ordering? I searched the TRD4U side but part number, and it is giving me no results. Post a link please?

I'm interested in countersinking an aluminum gate plate and using flat-head screws to avoid snagging stuff on the panhead screws. Obviously, without reinstalling the plastic cover.
