Yep. Don't think it will be an issue. Just seemed odd. There's a whole 3/4" to 1" of useable space there. I couldn't see and obstruction so why not maximize the volume. All good. Next is the tail gate lock install. I will demand to see a warrant to open the tail gate... Lol:locked::threadjacked:

OP, back to your question - Yeah I bought one for my 2011 and then put it in my 2014 - same gap. I was a little pissed at the design of this thing. There's well over like 3/4" tolerance there, I'd have to measure to be sure, but I was surprised at how large it is. I'm a mechanical designer so I think it's pretty sloppy design work. Sheet metal vendors can manufacture to .005" - .010" easily these days. You got the right model, it's just poor design work.

With that extra space I could have fit a larger pistol in there.

No problems with mine..... but then again, I don't put anything ontop of it that will fall in there. ;)

How did this thread go from asking a basic question to discussions about legality?

Can you say..."It's none of yo damn business" what we put in our vaults. ;)

Do you guys know that little cubbie storage area in the back of the bed with the flimsy door that twists open? Would a cop need a warrant to open that up? Should I put a lock on it?

Here in Ma., I read the law as saying you cannot leave a weapon unattended in your vehicle unless it is secured in a locked box, vault, or the trunk. I also have a MMJ card so I am allowed to possess MMJ. The law does require cause to open the vault without a warrant. Either way I dont worry about it as I have nothing to hide from the law, ever

The first week I had my vault installed I opened the console lid and tossed my work badge on top of the vault, closed the lid and drove off. Couldn't find my badge for two days as I hadn't realized it could slide into the gap that you're referring to.

I bought an air conditioner seal from Lowe's. I think it's 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 36". It's very compressible and easy to stuff into that gap. I also installed a length of it in the gap nearest the driver - far less likely but I had extra foam and it was worth it to avoid having to remove the 16 screws to pull the console again.

As an aside, I was disappointed with how much space was wasted by lazy engineering/manufacturing. In addition to the gap you highlighted, space is lost fore and aft as the vault is measurably smaller than the console itself. I put everything in there - my glovebox is virtually empty - and I wished it was bigger, but there are no alternatives that do it better than CV.

The LockerDown model has the same gap.

From looking at it, there is a lip that extends into the console area. It appears the Console Vault was shortened so that it could drop right in without interference from that lip.

I didn't notice that lip. Guess that's a good explanation. It could be also down to cost of manufacturing. The more simple the cheaper it is to make. I'd expect maximizing the volume would eat into the profit to much at $300 retail price. Nice catch tomwil.

Did you also read the federal law that prohibits anyone who uses a controlled substance from “shipping, transporting, receiving or possessing firearms or ammunition.”

From what I gather you're not legally allowed to have both. You're taking a big risk either way. :rasta::quickdraw::spy:

Now that the law interpretation conversation is over, do any of you that own either one of these know the dimensions of the locks on your vaults? I'm asking as I found a lock cylinder that uses a Toyota key that I'd like to replace the original lock with.

I'm going to buy one of these vaults as I need one but having the convenience of one less code or key would make me happy.

I have replaced the lock in my Console Vault to match keys with locks I have elsewhere on my truck and trailer. I don't have the specific dimensions but that lock looks far too long for the Console Vault application. At almost two inches in length it's probably at least an inch too long, maybe more.

Thanks for the link, though - I also like to reduce the number of keys I have and didn't know this was an option. I'm now trying to think up new applications to use it!
