Front diff, tans case and rear diff oil?

Hey guys. I'm getting somewhat close to changing out my fluids and wanted to know some more information. I use RP and have always used RP. Just something I have always stuck with. I have a sport and I have heard different stories with having to add LSD additive. Some say you have to and some say the newer trucks don't need the additive. If I use RP I guess it wouldn't matter because of their blend but I am planning on using RP gear oil 75w90 in all three because I think that is what weight it calls for for all three. I guess my question is or more information can I run this product in all three? Or does the front diff and trans case need to use something different? Appreciate any advice.

 

What year Sport?
2005 to 2008 Sport TRD had a mechanical limited slip rear differential (requires fluid designed of LSD diffs).
In 2009, all Tacomas have open differentials and all Tacomas have traction control (TRAC/AUTO LSD). When I changed (actually Speed Freek in Vista) the diff fluids, we used Mobil One 75/90 in the front diff and transfer case and Mobil One 75/135 in the rear diff. The Mobil One is rated for limited slip diffs as well.

 

What year is your truck? If you have a 2009+ ...you don't have to worry about friction modifiers.
You have an AUTO LSD which functions via the brake system - NOT the internals of the diff.

I used same oil in all - 75w90. I have 2007 Sport - which required me to put friction modifier in.

 

I have 2014. So I should be good using that oil in everything then?! That's what I thought just wanted to make sure. Just didn't want to put an oil in that had the somewhat additive in it in a component that doesn't require it. Didn't think it would mess anything up but better safe than sorry

 

since you have a 2014, there is no need to put in an LSD additive. If the oil you're putting in has one in it, it is still fine to use. I'm using

$30 mobil 1 75w90 mobil 1 104361 75W-90 synthetic gear lube - 1 quart (pack of 2)

mobil 1 75w90 and it comes with an LSD additive in it already, but it works fine (i don't need it either).

 

Have a quick question guys. I know the manual calls for 75w85 for rear and for some reason it's difficult to find that in stores. I am one who doesn't use the dealer as much as possible and I asked the service guy there if if would be ok to use 75w90 in the rear. His response which I already knew the answer was no, stick was is recommended in the manual. And he goes on to tell me that Toyota only recommends changed those fluids every 30k. I go on to tell him that my manual states every 15 k for front and rear and 30k for trans case. I am at 10k now and was going to go ahead and do the change due to the long weekend and was planning on changing the front and rear with RP 75w90 so it's an easy go in grab a few quarts of the same product and be out. What do you guys think? Will putting 75w90 in the rear hurt anything? And he was crazy to tell me that 15k was to early for a change unless I do a lot of towing. I don't but I do do some minor off roading, tow a boat during duck season and live in Washington where it rains all the time. I do t think it will hurt but what do you guys think. Is the dealer just trying to get Neto buy their products and service? A quick response will be truly great full since I am on my way to the store now. Thanks.

 

As I have said before, Speed Freek put 75/135 Mobil One in the rear diff... and that was 40,000 miles ago. 75/90 went into the front diff and the transfer case. Speed Freek was a Toyota Tech and his logic was that the rear diff gets the brunt of the work, even in 4WD.

 

Just making sure because I was just on the phone with a Toyota tech! Like I suggested he was probably just giving me the text book answer he haves to give. But if I had a buddy that was a Toyota tech I would trust him over the dealership tech. Thanks for the info!

Mobile 1 does NOT come with friction modifiers in it.

It is LSD COMPATIBLE .....
