I can't recall seeing any in VT/NH either. That's always one thing I use to console myself about the frame issues, I always think "well at least the bodies never rust out"

This thread is killing my buzz on that.

Did you have it resprayed? It almost looks like i'm seeing some failure near a couple body lines on the roof?

Stripped it down to bare metal due to the fact that rust was starting to show in some parts where the clear coat was peeling and then resprayed it.

I see a decent amount in SD on Indigo Ink and Black paint. Most the time in areas that aren't very costal, once mine started it spread quick and even though my truck is lifted it was the biggest eye sore in my opinion. Luckily when I got my fenders painted it wasn't to much more to get the roof painted as well. Macco verbally quoted me $250 and they asked me if I wanted the quote on paper, I said sure and once they put it on paper it went up to $470:eek:

I live in Wisconsin, plenty of salt on the roads in the winter. All my rust is underneath and my rear bumper is in bad shape. My truck still gets compliments, even though it has 100,000 miles on it. My wife's car is a different story, 2002 with 170,000, paint has failed in multiple places. But what do you expect, it's a GM vehicle:eek:

Come to Hawaii and you'll see this roof rusting problem at epidemic proportions on 2nd gens...not so much on 1st gens and even pre-1995 pickups. I'm an original owner of a 1993 3.slow extended cab 4x4 and the roof started peeling about 12 yrs. after we bought it. I also own a 2012 double cab 4x4 and am very aware of the potential problem. It seems at about 5 yrs in the clear coat starts "pocketing" even with constant care/detailing on the 2nd gens and once that goes the rust starts and literally spreads like wildfire. Couple of friends caught it in time and have repainted the roof but I see an alarming amount of owners who have not and it's sad to see...especially when the rest of their truck looks good. A couple of weeks ago I even saw one with the metal roof panel completely rusted out exposing the support beams inside. It was obviously a work truck but even other brands that are twice as old don't wear that much that quickly. I love my two pickups and I think we just need to be vigilant about this paint problem. BTW...there's a very good chance that Hawaii may have the most Tacomas per capita in the world...it's not unusual to have 2 and even 3 Tacoma households...Aloha

This makes me glad my paint doesn't have a clear coat layer (plain Black). Not that the paint is invincible but it sounds like failing clear coat is the main culprit in these incidents

I have a 2005 in black sand pearl and the roof has started to rust pretty bad. First the clear coat bubbled and now its rusty. In the santa cruz mountains, lots of redwood sap falls and I didn't notice it in time. My truck has 183k mi and still runs like new. I do have a few paint chipped spots that I touched up with black enamel finger nail polish.

How much should a roof paint job cost with factory style paint?

My 2006 started flaking on the roof about 6 months ago while I was deployed. By the time I got back it was too far gone to try to reverse. Hawaii has a ton of Tacomas with rusting roofs. It's terrible because the rest of the truck is just fine. I just spent the money for all the tools I need to repaint the entire truck. I'll do the roof first and decide if I want to keep going. I had estimates from $4k-$8k to repaint the entire truck; $600-$800 for the roof alone being about the average. Most places didn't even want to deal with it or quoted me $3000 to cut off the roof and replace it. A gallon of the paint is $250 plus $150 for the clear coat. $350 for a compressor, $200 for the DA sander and spray guns plus about $300 for all the safety, sanding equipment and other pneumatic accessories. I figure I can sell some of the tools if I want after using them and get a few hundred back.

I also need to repair 2 doors that have some pretty deep scrapes (previous owner ran into a fire hydrant on both sides...) It's on the lower portion of the door and might be aluminum or fiberglass... Anyone know for sure and the best way to repair? I'll post some pics soon.

Bought a brand new 2001 and in months, not years, the front bumper peeled and rusted. Not a big deal, I never saw it when I was driving.
