Oh I'm sure the all season type are good tires. For on road low traction conditions. When she goes off road with them slicks the spinning will start. Or even several inches of snow on road they will clog up and not work as good as a wide spaced lugged tire. Its not so much about stopping here as it is gaming traction for forward momentum.

It starts correctly now, thanks to the best dealer tech ever.
I think ours might be siped along with having studs? I remember we slipped out on 26 on our way up to Timberline, thank goodness just outside of Rhodedendron so we weren't on the side of a cliff! But we did a 180, and fortunately kind of softly careened off the road and into a snowbank, no damage. The tread on the old BFGs wasn't good enough when we hit that patch of ice going fairly fast, and it was a big wake up call. Went straight to Schwab in Sandy and bought the best tires with studs and siping we could get!! Just imagine how I was when that happened guys!! :annoyed:  :argue:

Back to the tires - Eric mentioned that we could remove the studs so that we could start using those tires year round, since the tread on the BFGs is wearing out and a new set is $800 - would be great to delay that expense as much as possible. I hate to see those Bighorns sit there and collect dust so much of the year, because we really only put them on when we go snowboarding, which isn't much these days. You guys think that's a good idea to remove the studs?

It wouldn't hurt in anyway, specially if the center lugs are siped. And u get the all year capability instead of worrying about pulling em off all the time. I'd pry keep em till the little nipples are all worn off though, then pull em out.

Again the Toyo CT has huge lugs. Trust me. I soil sample fields in the winter. They work better than a any MT in those conditions. You need to check out the link for the CT.

Hey, don't trust they guy from Canada on snow tires. What could I know with some of the most extreme freeze thaw cycles in the world.

On the 4 Runner, I've heard that there's a bunch of stuff hanging down associated with the coil spring rear suspension that would be "in the way" on a really bad road, going over boulders and stuff - what do you guys think?

I care a lot about that because it would impact whether the Runner could be really a direct replacement for the Taco when the Taco is done. If not, we'd wind up wanting another Taco at that point, then we'd wind up spending way more than what we need to on fuel over the years. In that case, I'd rather get a low cost, super MPG saver now (Corolla or Prius), then another truck when that time comes.

Nothing hangs below the axle, that will be your limiting factor. And it is just as low as your Tacoma.
Theres a bar on the axle that keeps if from going side to side since there are no leafs to hold the axle in place and its not "in the way"

People offroad runners just as hard as Tacoma's. They were built for people who wanted an SUV style instead of a pickup but have the same capabilities.

Another thing I'm nervous about with the Runner is - think about how sentimental we got over the Taco!! I know we'd fall in love with that Runner, then we'd have TWO that we'd be inclined to make decisions from our hearts about when it came to expensive repairs. That's pretty scary!!

I really think we'd have to get very specific ahead of time about what our bottom line on repair versus replace would be on each of them, or we could really bury ourselves!!

It's almost like we need a car we love to hate, like the Civ, to save ourselves from ourselves

Giant bacon cheeseburgers, fries, good beer, and a good movie.

Break time from the great vehicle debate over here.

How long do you guys think it will take before one of us says "blah blah blah 4 Runner" or "blah blah blah HRV" ??????? I'm guessing we won't make it past the opening credits......:D

would it do all the off roading stuff the taco can do? yes

will it rock climb as well as a taco can? I doubt it but do you really go off road extreme rock climbing in your taca?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHRgAS90baw

if you plan to do this to destroy your vehicle then buy a rock climber that you cant drive on the street :mudding:
