The new 8.8 locking diff should be stronger than the 8.0 locking diff. Otherwise...why make the switch?

The current 8.4 uses the same ring...8", as the 8" locking rear diff. It is, slightly stronger, from the info I'm gathering.

In conclusion the new 8.8 locking diff should be an upgrade to what we currently have. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

    ....

Some folks are stating that the new 2016 8.8" is actually an 8"? Can someone confirm this or provide where they are getting this information?

All mannual trans models will come equipped with the 8.8 inch rear diff, but only the TRD off road will come with the elocker 8.8" in both auto and manual trans.

Auto trans models in the 2016 lineup (non TRD OR) will come equipped with the 8.0" rear diff without the elocker.

Yea that's what in heard from them too. The actuator is inside the diff instead of outside as well. That might contribute to the larger size of the diff. Also they said it was available with 4.30 gear ratio...

That's what I'm reading as well. I believe the 4.30 gear is only available in manual transmission.

I think Jeff wrote that its not but I think I am confused on this just like everybody else.
I think simple question is this.

Is Ring & pinion the same on 8.8 and 8.0 Differentials
    Yes /NO

What is actual l diameter of Ring on 8.8 and 8.0 ?
    From what Jeff posted
Diameter supposed to be different so it should be a different gear.

The real question is are they reusing the current t100 axle, that would be awesome.

It doesn't seem like anything is really being reused.

The "8.4" is an 8", the 8.0 is an 8". The 8.8 is an 8.8".

The new e-locker uses an internal magnetic actuator instead if the motor-type on the older 8" e-locker.

Curious about the axle housing itself for 3rd member swaps.

Not sure, the manual states the BD22A[N] as 225mm/8.8".

My friend and I grenaded both of our 8.4" diffs. He has an automatic I've got a standard. They may be stronger but not unbreakable. Only with 33's on them.

I think you are both correct and it seems common for the 8.75" and 8.8" to interchange for reference and I think the translation is slightly off in the metric conversion.

The diff size is only as good as the gears & internals inside it.

The question you should be asking........ What's the diameter of the axle shaft??? And has that been improved?

The larger diff won't do shit for you if your axle shafts are pencils. ;)

It should have larger axles as well, though I don't know the exact sizing obviously. That said, have axles been a weak point on the Tacoma's rear axle? I thought it had mostly been differential internals that had been causing issues.

Axle shafts are good for 40s, only seen a few Tacoma rear axle shafts break you have to really try. The ring and pinion have always been the weak link in these trucks. Luckily just a few bolts and they can be swapped out. I believe the aftermarket gearsets are significantly stronger than the oem stuff though. It would have been nice if Toyota would have machined a load bolt to prevent deflection in the newer differentials though.
