Almost got kicked out of college...managed to pull my head out of my ass and move my 0.6 GPA up to a 2.8 and graduate on time

Now I'm almost 33 and still owe money...should have just bailed when they suggested it and joined the military

I was able to convince myself since I grew up in one of the most violent cities in the country, saw a lot of people making poor life choices, worked a back-breaking job for little money, and just knew I wanted something better for myself. The day I left for the army I had a couple sets of clothes in a bag and $40.00 in my wallet, that is all I started with. I chose an MOS (job field) that interested me and fit into a long-term plan, gained experience while serving, and used college to build upon that real-world experience. I then spent about 6 years after college working jobs that would round out my skills/experience as I worked towards starting a career...lots of hard work with some opportunities to pursue better paying jobs rather than staying focused on my long-term career goals.

A lot of the guys I grew up with still point back to where we grew up, the shitty public schools we attended, the lack of opportunity in our hometown, etc when they try to justify where they are today. I never got caught up in those sort of excuses though, I knew I was capable of more if I put my mind to it and stepped outside my comfort zone. It was a difficult decision to leave my family and friends but I had to do what was right for me, and my future family, so I hoped they'd understand and did my thing.

Every individual has the ability to change their situation, although it takes time and effort to do so. That is the message I wanted to put out there when I decided to comment on this thread.

Finishing up my last year of my 6 year long journey to earn a BS in civil engineering so there is no way I am getting kicked out of college this semester. Been wanting to be school free for the past year so I can enjoy other things in life besides school but in my last year of college I think I literally see the light at the end of the tunnel so not going to let anything ruin my last year. Staying trouble free!

Good for you, Snowhite. College, or vo-tech training, is a good thing to have behind you. I have always tried to never stop learning though. That's one reason I'm on TW!
