    Not enough...
My deepest condolences. I am really sorry about your loss.

I often think about the day when I will have to say good bye to Dre and I get tears in my eyes. I am a grown-ass man and this is the only thing that makes me tear up. Dogs are incredible creatures.

My Chief turned 8 last month and you can see he's starting to age. He still has another 10 left in him, I hope, but I also think about when the time comes. My fiance said that she will not even call me on that day because she knows how upset I'll be. That's also why I try to keep 2 to ease the pain somewhat, although not much.

It's not originally why I have two dogs, but it is in the back of my mind. I think it helped when I lost Jake the Dawg. Bear was a huge help in getting through the pain. Jake in the front. Bear in the back. Jake passed a couple hours after this picture was taken. He was only 9.

My wife asks me why I call her little mutt a demon dog piggy. This is why:

Matt I am sorry for your loss and as said no words can really help. I will be reading the Rainbow Bridge all too soon once again. As also mentioned have had a lot of dogs and it gets harder, not easier. There is another one that I read when needed also and I posted it earlier in this thread if it can help at all Posted in Lets See Your Dogs!!

I am hoping the same here. It is hard having an old dog and a young pup at times and wish they were closer in age. On the other hand hate to think about loosing both near the same time. And no one of us or even a dog no matter what the age is promised tomorrow.

Old Tollers get pretty gnarly looking but I still think of him as a pup much of the time. Despite the fact that he is deaf and has a hard time seeing now.

You are correct as always Don. I should have worded that a little better. My Dane died at 8 and Chief was about a year old or so. Defintely made it a little easier. Chief is now 8 and Ms Layla is 2.

I'm sorry for your loss too. It will be a year on October 6th that we lost Polar, the white boxer in my avatar. Although I have really fallen in love with our new rescue girl, I still miss him and tear up now and then. I am going to take a cheeseburger back to his grave that day and let her enjoy the shit out of it, with him and for him. It gets easier, but I will never trade the experience with him and the hurt it caused to lose him. Amazing they can be such a huge part of your heart.

You worded it just fine. I wasn't trying to correct you. I understand completely. Like I said, originally, I got the second dog because the first (Jake) was too high strung and was a complete tard in the duck blind. Then I got Bear. After Jake died I knew I'd always have two dogs because it helped ease the pain of losing one. Bear is 11. Sadie is 3. They get along great, so I got lucky there. I found out a couple months ago that Bears sire passed away. He was 16. Looks like it's gonna be a while before I get another puppy. Hopefully. Hell, I'd get one sooner but the wife won't have it. And we'd have no room left on the bed.

You going to try Sadie in a duck blind?
I ask because Katie is an outstanding water retriever, but won't sit still in a blind. It also gets too cold here for a shorthair to be wet.
So I've been locked to upland unless a lab guy invites me.

I was gonna say, not a chance, but figured, as long as the water isn't too deep she wouldn't have a problem. She's a crappy swimmer. Loves the water, just hasn't figured it out. However, the big problem is, there's no way in hell she'd be content to wait around doing nothing until the birds come. She was born to run. More so than some other GSP's I know. I never taught her how to 'sit'. Was cautioned against that for a 'Pointer'. I hunted pheasant with a guy who brought his GSP that was raised hunting ducks. Every time he found a bird (and that wasn't often) he would 'sit' pointed towards the bird. He was great at retrieving, just not a good upland dog.

If anyone remembers from my last posts.. Bailey went into our normal vet office last Friday, mostly to discuss treatment options but also to reaffirm the ACL tear diagnosis. It was, and after talking about ballpark costs for various treatments and expectations, secondary effects, recovery, etc,. we ended up deciding to do a TPLO procedure and reconfigure and plate the joint. Took her in this morning for a pre-op "pain patch" of Fentanyl and tomorrow morning around 8AM we'll be dropping her off for surgery, will be picking her up sometime Thursday (likely in the evening).

They gave us a low and high side quote of $2500 and $3200 respectively, with the "average" procedure somewhere in the $25-2600 range. After care visits and x-rays will be about another $450, plus some extra for a prescription of sedatives to help keep her calm while she's healing. A little nervous about it all, but tomorrow the road to recovery begins (hopefully!). We'll also find out how the other leg is looking and see if it's likely to fail as well.

Thanks for the advice and support.
