    Hi guys,

Does anybody know what kind of technology is being used in the DRLs I'm seeing in the new Volvo, Jeep, BMW, Mercedes, etc? It looks like probably LED and is very white and very bright.

    TIA

Those Jewel Eyes are pretty sick. Each "cube" shines at certain degree of angle which together covers the proper areas. I think Andrew was designing a version of this for the 2012-2015's at one point.

Cob are still in a somewhat unreliable and unstable state. I'm not sure if newer cars are using these or not but, if they are, the tech that goes into them must be far better than what's available to the general public. Because from the cob I've tried, and have read about from multiple sources, is that they are very unstable and have a short life span. If newer cars are using these then that tech needs to be implemented into the aftermarket stuff. I'm sure there's lots of factors that play into the reliability of them as to what's available to the general public and how they use them, but so far I'm not impressed and am anxious to try anything cob again.

Edit: I think that most of the led drls in newer cars use independent leds and utilize special reflector technology to disperse the light more effectively. Kinda like the led light bars. Think of them like that, as mini led light bars. Independent leds inside a reflector housing. That's all it is. It's not just a board. It's a combination of premium leds with awesome reflectors. To which you'll never be able to replicate in older vehicles unless some kind of retrofit is possible. Which will be very expensive, and highly unlikely to accomplish a retrofit like that. But, cob is the latest thing (as far as I know) as far as trying to replicate that kind of tech.

Yeah you're absolutely right man. I spent like an hour searching for links about quality COB LEDs. You know its bad when the only thing that comes up is Alibaba and Ebay hits.
