I been experimenting with 87 gas and 91 gas. Not sure if there is even a difference.

    Shell Gas

    Getting about 21.5mpg.
I have about 860 miles now approximately.

Quick question, how are you calculating the mileage, manually or by the computer and could I ask what speeds and type of driving hwy or city that allows your mileage?

No point to putting anything higher than what's recommended unless you have re-tuned an engine with higher compression ratios. Just a waste of money.

It has to do with the organic chemistry behind how Octane affects combustion. This is a rudimentary explanation of how octane rating works:

    http://auto.howstuffworks.com/compression-ratio-octane-ratings.htm

    Here are a few quotes:

"Quite simply, octane ratings are a measurement of a gas's ability to resist detonation."

"Putting high-octane fuel into a car that only needs low-octane fuel is a total waste of money,"

Basically, the higher octane rating, the more that the gasoline resists spontaneous combustion without first being ignited by the spark plug. If this is the case, the gas and air mixture can be compressed even tighter before exploding, obtaining more released energy when it is exploded. Most engines today do not have high compression ratios, and 87 octane is all that is required to prevent the gas from detonating prematurely. On the other hand, high compression engines that do require high octane can spontaneously combust lower octane, causing engine knocking.

Simply put: all the folklore about putting in high octane "now and then" to "clean" the engine or get better performance is all nonsense. If your manual says you need 87, 87 is all you need. If it says you need 93, 93 is the minimum you better use.

+2, I use 93 in boat only because I have milled heads and running high compression. Ran some 93 once in Tacoma with no MPG increase and nothing on butt dyno. Why waste money for no gain.

The guys who insist on putting premium in their Tacomas are probably the same guys who change the oil at 3000 miles. Both are a complete waste of money.

You're much better off using ethanol-free gasoline than using a higher octane gasoline. 87 100% gas is your best bet. Your truck will thank you.

There is no choice here in CA. We have to use the crap ethanol gas, unless there is some magical gas station somewhere I haven't seen. lol
