Out of the new owners we have here, is anyone willing to do a 0-60 test run? It doesnt need to be highly scientific, just use a stop watch (stop watch app on your smart phone) and try a run with both ect engaged and disengaged. Ive done these types of runs myself on flat road and it can be relatively accurate.

After seeing the car and driver thread listing it at 8.1 im actually a bit discouraged. I realize the truck isnt a race car, but i do expect a certain level of "get up and go" from a vehicle, and 8.1 to get to 60 from 0 is not really cutting it.

Ive always had relatively quick, to outright fast vehicles, i raced motorcycles for a number of years, and i know i will get bored with something that cant get out of its own shadow.

Sounds like you'll get bored then. No I don't have a new Tacoma so I can't offer a time, but these trucks aren't meant for speed. In the end, that's what it comes down too. Sounds like you already know your answer.

8.1 isn't "bad" for a truck but I imagine old 4.0 is faster. Chevy Colorado 3.6 liter is faster too. Toyota really watered down the engine this generation.

As stated, i realize its not a race car, but in todays market where 4x4 trucks can turn 5.6 0-60 times and still get 20+ mpg, 8.1 is pretty poor. The average full size trucks are typically in the mid 6 second range, and mid size trucks should be low 7s at worst (imo).

Everyone has their own reasons for what they like in a truck and what they need. I didnt really want a full size truck so a mid size was just right.

The tacoma is exactly what i want in many ways, but the poor acceleration is a disappointment.

There is something fishy. The new tacoma should hit the low 7s easily on its heavies configuration.
Maybe the test site was on a high altitude road.

Thats my exact thought. And im hoping thats the case. I could live with low/mid 7s even though id be happy with mid 6s.

Now, im not saying im going to pass on the taco because it has many other things i like, but i would be bummed out.

I think people's expectations are always too high with a Tacoma revision. I was guilty of this too after the gen 3 was unveiled. Toyota has made it's reliability name by offering technology that is somewhat antiquated in exchange for added reliability. Always how Toyota has rolled.

Is it the .4% less torque or 18% more hp that make you say this?

Anyone have a legit reason to floor the truck from a dead stop to 60 mph?

I say this because I have driven both. The 4.0 was a better engine suited for a truck. Low end torque means something, even on smaller pickups.

Maybe not to 60 mph, but fast acceleration can be important safety-wise too. Ever had to turn into into traffic when there are a lot of vehicle on the road?

A lot .. I live in Houston. Never to 60 mph though, which was the original question.

My wife drives a Sienna AWD, roughly the same power/weight ratio as the Gen 3 Taco V6, similar engine/trans. 0-60 is 7.5-8s, quarter trap is 90-92 MPH. Basically the same as the magazines have tested the new Taco. Thrust is adequate for the vehicle; the only annoying thing is that it has to rev to get any power, but the engine sounds awful/strained at high RPMs.

My car is turbo, so I'm spoiled by having peak torque on demand at any RPM. Turbo engines really are well-suited to how people use trucks, but don't count on Toyota figuring this out any time soon.

Sure but getting up and going from 0 to 60 does give some inclination as to acceleration in general and it's a fairly standard measure of acceleration. An auto mobile that gets from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds will probably be able to get from 40 to 70 quicker than an automobile that takes 10 seconds to get from 0 to 60.

Tips for you guys that would like to get a nice 0-60 launch
Make sure to have ECT on and do a proper launch by pressing the gas and brake and the same time to increase a bit the rpms.
Try with the traction control on or off.
Not sure if the eLSD is enabled by default but testing which one helps the most on the time is a good idea too.

For those with 4x4 try 4x2 first. If traction is an issue then activate the 4x4.

Mags usually keep it simple they dont push it harder.

Good luck. There isn't a F/I kit available and with the lack of tuning options on Tacomas that will be even harder.
The good thing of the twins is that the ECU can be reflashed and there are multiple shops out there with tweaks that improves the drive ability/efficiency/fun factor of those trucks by a great margin.
