2005-2015 Tacoma Safari Snorkel

Considering everyone says the Airflow is too bulky, this looks about the same size.

 

Airflow America not to big not to small made for our trucks.

Yes I do but I also think it is to large for our trucks I think Airflow nailed it with the size of the snorkel for our trucks. Some folks don't like the air dam but you can change it to a smaller one or a filterd one. I don't have anything aganist the other snorkels it is just my 2cents and like most others not worth a damn. The only problem I have had was a write up done by a guy on another forum posted on one of the snorkel threads on TW saying that the Airflow was a piece of crap. I have had mine for a year now without any problems it sits in the sun it is not garaged and it has been in the 90s for a couple of months around here. It is in the same condition as when I bought it and I don't use any type of rubber or plastic dressing on it. It is a very good snorkel and just another great choice of snorkels out there plus I realy like the kangaroo it looks bad ass.

I had read what others experience was with the airflow and I just was convinced. Especially problems with snow,I had never heard of any problems with the safaris. Not saying thay are perfect. I do agree with you the new one looks huge, but I guess that is by design for enough air. I got tired of waiting and just got the hilux one, so far no problems.

 

I also like that Airflow came out with the snorkel for our trucks before Safari did the fact that the new Safari snorkel is larger seems as though they followed the form of Airflow. As far as design I think most snorkels perform about the same so I would say it's personal preference although I do think they found the larger diameter tubing is more adequate for 2nd gen Tacomas.

 

How difficult is the Hilux model snorkel to install for someone just somewhat handy...

 

If you buy one from Kurt, AKA: @cruiseroutfit, you might find one with the very simple to follow template that he includes with them. Or, if no longer available from him anymore, then maybe source his template from one of his past customers.

 

You know how much they run? I've seen a few prices over the internet

 

Snorkels? Whatever he lists them for on his site. Check his profile for his phone number or the link to his website. Leftover templates from past customers? I have no idea. If I had one myself I'd probably laminate it because they are really helpful.

 

Read a few pages back about updated prices. There's a new different plastic version of the hilux model thats cheaper. Also talk of a group buy. Its not easy, but not all that hard. Kinda just a pain in the butt. If you need it, it is reasonable to do, you just have to be creative in how you want to connect it to your intake. It is perfectly functional though.

 

My judgement might be clouded with confirmation bias on my decision to wait for this product, but the more I see images the more I like the look and my anticipation continues to build.

I almost pulled the trigger a few times... on alternatives

 

I remember when hanging out with my Type R buddies, a common mod on those Integras was to remove the air resonator from the intake. It looks like this (the big white box with two tubes):





Some guys would remove the box thinking it would benefit in HP gains and the engine would sounds louder. Some of my friends with a dyno at the time tested with it both on and removed and what we found out is that you actually lost power by removing the box. After talking to some engineers we figured it had something to do with how the resonator, or basically that large opening before the intake helped the vacuum pressure into the intake.

So how's this relate to the snorkel? My guess is the extra size has something to with helping the vacuum pressure into the intake instead of just a simple pipe going out of the truck. This might also explain why this intake would work well with SC'd engines and possibly offer gains on a stock motor.

While it may not look as slick as some of the other snorkels, I don't think it was made this big by accident, and part of the reason I'm really excited to get mine.
