Anyone with a '16 notice a change in the throttle response after several hundred miles or more? Guy on the TW Facebook page says his throttle feels much different after 1,000 miles than it did when he got it brand new. Says it feels much more responsive. Curious if there is any truth/reason behind that.

In theory, it *should* feel different after the break-in period. We may have to wait a bit for more people to actually get theirs and get through the break-in to see.

There's no possible way this could be. gen2 haters would have you believing the power of a brand new engine with less than 50 miles on it is that max power you'll ever see. Test driving brand new vehicles is a bitch isn't it.

And as I suspected no one who I directed the question to is answering, just armchair know-it-alls with theories. Gotta love Tacoma World.

Well you're wrong there buddy, because I actually own a 2016 SR5, but it sadly only has 161 miles on it as I suspect most owners do right about now. We'll report back once we've surpassed the 1k mark.

But what happens after the engine learns your driving habits? What is different from the truck than it was when it had 6 miles on it?

So a manual transmission probably wouldn't have much of a break-in period?

pretty obnoxious post there, especially considering one of the 2 responders is an actually owner. AND you dont need to own a 2016 taco to know that newer cars with their ecus make adjustments based on diving habits, etc..

I really hope that is true. I drove a double cab, V6, automatic SR TSS today just for grins. I need to drive the TRD Sport I would like to buy to compare, but so far, the 2016 6 speed didn't seem like it was quite dialed in. My 2013 five speed seems just right.

that was an overly simplified answer. To expand a litle, the ecu will adjust itself based on many factors such as altitude, temperature, quality of your fuel, clogged or open air filters. The ecu will try and maintain a certain af ratio and those are factors that can alter it. knock sensors keep an eye on timing and engines will typically produce more power when thoroughly broken in.

Now im no ecu engine guru , but i have been around a while and have always been around performance vehicles.

I understand. My 2014 Corvette runs around on half the cylinders most of the time but I can wake it up at any time and have it switch into performance shift mode. Call it beast mode. Night and day.

The Taco I drove today was a brief run. Just a few miles. I am reserving judgement until I've driven a few more models. TRD Sport and Limited if I can find one close by.

My 2 cents as a non-owner who has never driven a gen3? Break in matters, but I bet most of it comes down to getting used to the truck. My 2014 Tundra was the same way. They map the newer throttles so you really have to lay into them to get full power. It's almost a gimic to get you to drive tamer and get better mpgs. Over the break in period, your foot is 'breaking in' to a new vehicle as much as the engine is, so you just get used to giving it more throttle.

Yeah I only ask because the 2016 seemed so gutless off the line. For as weak as the 3.4 liter is in my 2002, I can squeal the rear tires if I had to. If I have to make a quick turn into traffic, I can do it. Just seems like if I wanted to do that in the 2016, it would take a 2 second delay before I got any real power. Not how a truck should feel. I want to believe the gen 3 is capable of more than what I experienced.

I was trying to figure out a way to say this!
It's a new vehicle with a different drive train and different 'quirks'.
All take some getting used too.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
You could also not be use to the dirve by wire throttle. Coming from a 02 myself with a direct connection to the throttle body i notice the lag with newer vehicles. My 2016 Tundra is the same way. Im sure over time it will learn your driving habbits and feel more responsive.

Are there many '16 owners who would have passed the break-in point yet? haha

Try the ECT button. It changes the shift points and throttle mapping. From what I hear, that changes everything. My Tundra had a tow button that did the same thing, and it honestly made it so sensitive, I couldn't use it without a trailer. My Tundra was more responsive with towing engage and a 3500lbs trailer, than with towing off and no trailer.
