Take a dog out with you. Even a bird dog will sniff it out a lot quicker than you will. Usually they will find some nasty hole to ball up in, or worse, climb up and die in the crook of a tree.

You can do that in Oregon? Use a dog that is. I wouldn't want to get caught in the woods with a dog with my rifle and tags here in WA. I'd have some explaining to do....

    Ugh. Hunting.

Sure do like venison jerky though. Does that make me a hypocrite?

As a nonhunter, why is that bad to have a dog with you?

Not sure about Oregon, but here in Washington, hunting with dogs is prohibited. They are a pretty effective means of harvesting a bear or even a cougar.

Hunting bear and cougar with dogs is illegal. Recovering already dead game with dogs is not. I have a friend that has pit bulls trained exclusively for deer and elk recovery. We all hope for a one shot clean kill, but sometimes it just doesn't happen.

If I'm not mistaken it's legal here. I've seen a lot of trucks parked along 99 with dog kennels in the back. Also my boss just left yesterday with his daughter and dog to go hunting.

He already said he wasn't even sure of his shot, what if he goes out with a dog and finds a half dead bear?

I'm sure it's morally superior to buy government meat from whole foods that's been injected full of all kinds of crap, dyed, and raised in a cage. I prefer 100% free range all natural gluten free wild game myself.

I called odfw today and they said no way in hell to using dogs to track blood. Stupid law. Might be illegal, but its the ethical thing to do to ensure the recovery of a wounded animal. When I get a puppy its definitely getting trained to track blood.

I should have been a bit more specific, hunting big game (deer bear elk cougar) with dogs is prohibited. Birds are OK.

You can hunt bobcat, upland birds, and waterfowl with dogs legally. Also government hunters use hounds for "problem" bear and cougar, but somehow that is ok.

Wtf. Ok, you can use my Lab to go "grouse hunting" in the same area if you'd like. He'll sniff it out. I'll even carry a 12 gauge to make it look right.

Ahh ok. That makes sense. My uncle still uses a dog to hunt cougar and bear. However, he is a trapper for the government in the Portland area.

A buddy of mine that bow hunts swears by carrying a spray bottle of hydrogen peroxide with him. Guess it foams like mad when it comes in contact with blood.

Yea, some bullshit about people abusing it and using them to hunt big game. If someone is going to use dogs to hunt they will do it no matter what. No reason to punish everyone else and waste animals in a futile attempt to curtail hunting with dogs. Royally pissed me off. Nothing I hate more than wasting an animal. This is the first year its happened to me.
