I was thinking the same thing as you, but when I realized the dealers aren't really discounting the '15s I got annoyed and felt like a sucker (I'm expected to pay full price on last year's model?!?). Being that I don't really need the bed, and am not in love with the '16s the way I was 2nd gens, I find myself more drawn the 4R now. I figure I might as well get a Runner while it's still an ass-kicker.,...who knows what they will do to it in a year or two.

I'm good with paying 30K for a Tacoma DC 4x4.
    I'm not good paying 40K.

    At 40K I'm buying the F150.

    Not even a question.

well, okay.... if you want a huge truck, and don't plan on off roading, and are okay with questionable reliability... and most of all...

need to only consider the top of the line taco... you could easily get a kickass 4x4 yota for low 30's.

    I've owned several F-150's. Many Chevy/GMC's. And a few Tacoma's.
Never had reliability issues with any.

My off road consists of farm and hunt trails. I don't do the rock climbing stuff.

Love my Tacoma. But as has been shown, they are rapidly approaching full size dollars. A big part of the lure of the Tacoma is the purchase price for many.

My SR5 4x4 is a good truck. If I was to upgrade to gen3, I'd probably want the TRDOR. And then I'm in F150, Silverado, Ram territory.

Rusted frames that require total replacement, 10 years to do a leaf recall, and an incurable wheel shimmy due to poor frame tolerances. Tacomas sure are trouble free.

And for many it's not. Most people do NOT buy Taco's just because they can't afford full sizes.

Watch out for inflation....GM twins and Tacos are up in price....what's next, full size prices will go up in relation.

You guys ought to get off your high horse regarding sticker price and perceived Toyota and Ford reliability. Both brands' quality and reliability are not what it used to be. Yes, F150 is up there in the 40K-50K. However, like all domestic brands, their vehicles are heavily discounted. I got back from Ford dealer an hour ago, 2016 3.5 Ecoboost Access Cab (incredible pickup and speed), has an msrp of 48K. After all rebates and discounts, the truck was $38K+TTL. Plus, zero financing if you need it. If anyone is interested wait until end of the year....that's when the discounts and rebates will start rolling in.

The F150 in my opinion is miles better and more capable, but most people buy Tacomas for size and resale.

qthuynh, I hope potential F-150 buyers have better luck than I did. I am amazed at the poor build quality of mine.

Maybe I had unrealistic expectations of the F150 since I had a 2000 4Runner right before and it was a tank.

The Big 3, discounts their fullsizes...Toyota won't budge. GM won't move on the Colorado because it is a new design.

Right now, the best bang for the buck is an American 1/2 ton. yeah yeah they are big...better for hauling gear. gawd that "Tacoma is smaller, so it wheels better..." is a bit old. You can apply that to anything, hell, the stuff I like to "wheel" there is no way you're getting a Tacoma in to.

Yes. The 3rd gen 4Runner is arguably the best, most reliable SUV ever made. The 3.4L makes no power so everthing is overbuilt. We had a 99 and 02. My parents neighbor still has a the 02 and it looks new. I wish I had bought a 3rd gen 5-speed years ago to keep long term.

There are a lot of good points made in this thread, but I think I am a bit sensitive to it, because I have always loved the idea behind the Tacoma (Hilux for that matter, since I started liking these trucks, and the 4R, back in the 80s). They came out as an alternative to fulls size trucks.....people with different personalities and lifestyles bought them.....If you were not that type of guy to drive around in a big Ford e.g. surfers, off-roader, motorcross, etc... you loved the Toyota options. So for some,I guess the Taco and an F150 are are comparable, but for me they are apples to oranges

Toyota used to be great....what we get now is a watered down version. Believe the roles are reversing, domestics have caught up on the build quality, and Toyota is slipping.

I think there is some truth to this, but the point of my comment was not quality, it was lifestyle choice.

Also, not sure domestic has really caught up...ISIS, and the rest of the middle east and Africa, are driving Toyotas. My wife is on her third Sienna and we never had problem with any of them. I on the other hand gave GM a chance and leased a Cadillac, there are a lot of great things about it, but I am happy it's a lease...I have had many problems with the brakes, and a sunroof leaking issue....all within the first two years.

And btw, I am happy that domestics have gotten much better, and have caught up to the Japanese and Germans in many ways....what was going on in the 80s and 90s was down right embarrassing!
