ok. So am I the first? Bought a 2016 double cab long bed sr5 4x4. installed Scout app, and it doesnt work. put in destination, gives me the first direction, and then freezes. drive a few miles, stop navigation, restart, gives me a new direction, and then freezes. no matter what I do, always the same outcome. back to having my garmin on the windshie20151009_121154.jpg ld. Any else having problems?

The scout app is using cell data to determine location, So I totally see this locking up, etc. based on cell coverage. Also it doesn't have the most updated info as far as NAV data is concerned.

At least with the Garmin, it is a real GPS.

Never had a car GPS that works great. My cellphone GPS is great and I use it everyday. Updates automatically. I would never opt for car GPS when the phone works great!

That's why I'm waiting for the SR5s with the "DN" SR5 package, includes integrated navigation and several other goodies. Problem is they haven't made any yet and probably won't until December. Same with TRD Sport access cabs with the Premium & Tech package. Nada one to be found!

The Scout NAV is a cell phone GPS, but it is just projected onto your radio screen using bluetooth. Once any bugs are fixed it should work great. Here is a video of how it works. To be honest, it looks better than the built in GPS:

Originally I was quite disappointed that Toyota would not be including Apple CarPlay in their cars. But after seeing this video, and in combination with the head unit compatibility with Siri, I think maybe that combination would be just as good as CarPlay, assuming this app is kept up to date.

    Useful video, thanks.

I imagine that this app will use a LOT of my allocated data, huh? Especially when driving cross-country.

Nah, GPS don't use much data at all actually. The maps are local on the device and only updated when the actual app receives an update, so 99%+ of the data is just being transferred between your phone and head unit. The only incoming data is stuff like traffic or when you search for something. As far as the actual GPS signal, your phone is always communicating with the cell towers as long as it's turned on, so it always knows its location -- that doesn't use any extra data.

....OK....am unfamiliar with in-car nav systems.....so can anyone tell me if the Scout-Nav that is built IN the Taco can be used independently....as in...without a smart-phone?.......

...Cos what it sounds like here, and of course I may be mistaken...( again! ).....is the phone is doing all the work..and just broadcasting the results to the head-unit?...o_O...

No, you need the smartphone to use the scout nav system. However, the premium head unit that comes on the TRD & Limited models includes a different built in navigation option that does not use a smartphone. The one discussed in this thread only applies to the head unit that comes in the SR5.

The SR5 with the "DN" appearance package also comes with the same integrated navigation as well as Entune audio, rear backup sonar, auto-dimming mirrors and upgraded rims. I can't believe people are buying the SR5 without this package. It only adds about $1600. I am waiting.

I relied the Scout App and didn't care for it. My NAV works fine, but if needed, I can use my iPhone. I also have a 2016 Prius (makes up for the TRD mileage) without NAV, so I use my iPhone and it works great.
