Thanks. I don't think my dad will ever restore that thing because it's perfect the way it is for what it gets used for. Over 500,000 miles, on its third 283, but still factory transmission and limited slip diff, including factory oils.

Yep. That truck still has the same transmission and differential oil that it rolled off the assembly line with. Only addition was some limited slip friction modifier in the diff.

I had two projects I wanted to get done today: thin out the biggest oak tree on my property and build a saw buck. So I did both at the same time.

We have to chop him up and season him for at least a year first.

I hear those aren't a bad little saw. Nice and light for limbing?

Amazing all-around saw. Great for limbing, bucking, and felling even moderate sized trees. In the ten years I've owned it it's only once quit on me. For no reason I can figure either because the next time I used it it worked fine. Starts in 3 - 5 pulls no matter how long it's sat. I grew up with my dad and his Stihl collection, but this one affordable Husky has made me a believer in the brand. The only flaw is the oiler likes to leak when not in use which I solved by storing it on its side.

My 51 does that too, I 'solved' it the same way, lol. But not before it antproofed the floor in the shed at my old house, haha!

Getting started on next year's wood. Pulled a couple small, well seasoned yellow wood logs out about a month ago with the tractor.

    Nice view while cutting.

They didn't amount to a whole lot, but happy to get even a little black locust as they aren't prominent on the property. Saw is new. Husq 550XP. I am seriously impressed with it compared to the 350 it replaced...it screams! It's no match for my Jonsered 2166, but one hell of a 50cc saw.

There was pucker-factor involved while felling this dead honey locust. Equipment shelter is near enough to be hit. A few nerve racking minutes and a couple wedges later, it was safely on the ground.

Took two logs out of the honey locust. Left the butt log as it had a ton of thorns on it. Fired the splitter up and ran a tank of gas through it. Splitting oak, cherry, honey and black locust and a little sugar maple right now. Lots more red oak to come down out of the woods. Hope to have next year's pile split and drying by Thanksgiving.

Thanks OZ. I think you have me beat though. You live in a place that I would holiday to. The area where I cut the logs used to be solid forest. Deer used to bed almost exactly where that Kubota was parked. At one time I planned to build up there until a 42" gas line came to town. The property is actually my father's, but I hope someday to call it my own. I spend a good deal of time there managing the woods and trails and have grown quite attached to it over the years.

It's nice to have a private 200+ acre off-road park to ride around on. It also provides nearly limitless firewood without cutting any live trees.

Just recently completed a major project. About 115 yards of ditch, 3 culverts and a shit ton of gravel to drain a couple of springs. That trail is only way back to that particular section due to terrain and we had become tired of dealing with the mud. One of the springs now drains to a mini pond for a wildlife watering hole.

Hi wood heaters! I just moved into a cottage on cape breton island that has a wood stove and electric heat. I can get by without the woodstove but enjoy it and would like to use it as much as possible his winter. There is no wood ready here for this winter so im wondering what you might recommend i look for that might be decent to burn this winter? What might dry relatively quickly once i split it? I would rather not purchase any wood but may buy a few uncut logs if it comes to it. Thanks!

When putting around the woods close by i found a spot with a 1/2 dozen 10 in h diameter standing dead pines, still have their bark so hey are not rotted out or saturated, i burn that kinda shit when camping cause its easy.. Is that stuff suitable for my woodstove?
