As an extension to my Oil Change Interval thread I have a question on the oil. My dealer told me the Tacoma is still the only Toyota that comes from the factory with standard oil in it, not synthetic, and it should continue to be fed standard oil.

Has anyone else heard this? (not that I believe it)

At 10K oil change intervals, I would suggest switching to synthetic after the break-in period. I don't have my Tacoma yet but I'm going to push the dealer and their 2 years of free service into synthetic at 5K-7500 intervals.

The 2.7 I4 in the Taco as come from the factory with synthetic for a few years now. The 1GR 4.0 V6 in the '05-'15 came with dino juice. However, the 2GR V6 in other Toyota vehicles has used synthetics for years. I'm pretty sure the Taco's 2GR would as well. Perhaps that's where the confusion is.

ok here is the thing. Does anyone trust that the dealer would put synthetic into your truck if you are taking it to them to do the oil changes? Some dealers are offering free oil changes so it makes sense to just bring it there. However, I tend to think that they would go cheap on the oil. If you want Mobile 1 for example, you may have to change it yourself.

Just follow the Toyota maintenance manual. I stuck to the Toyota service manual and my truck is still running good after 10 years.

There is no way I would conventional oil in 10,000 mile intervals. 5qts of Mobil 1 @ walmart is $24. I would spend that and let the dealership do the free change, you just supply the oil so you know what's going in it.

If you really believe your dealership would use a different oil than what's called out in the manual for your vehicle why would you even go to them?

Be careful buying cheap synthetic oil. There is no regulation on how much of it needs to be synthetic oil. Even bottles that say PURE SYNTHETIC are not held to any standard

It's the whole point the OP is making, he gets free oIL changes but isn't sure that they are using the correct oil. They are saying it calls for conventional and he's not sure there correct. He's not afraid of them claiming to use something there not.

I was told by the sales rep that the 2.7L are required to be changed at every 10k and its fully synthetic oil. When I went to do the paper work, the person in finance told me the Tacoma is the only truck where its required at 5k since they don't use the synthetic oil.

    Does anyone know truth?

Just read the manual. Change it when it says to. As for the oil? If it recommends 0w-20 you'll have to go with a synthetic. Most anything else in 5w-20 or 5w-30 flavors can be bought in either syn or dino. BTW, the 2.7 engine has come factory filled with 0w-20 syn for a few years for now. Up until the '15 model year, the OCI was 5K miles. I have not read the manual for the new '16....so I can't say for sure.

First of all don't take a salesmans word for anything, allot of them don't know squat because they hop from lot to lot. Ask the service manager.

Dealer is FOS. It comes with the oil that the manual says should be use. If the oil change interval is 10k it is synthetic. When they do the free two year service, DON't let them use anything other then what your manual said. You need to read the manual first before you talk to a dealer rep or service manager about service.

Is there a car maker who recommends a 10,000 OCI with anything other then full synthetic motor oil ?

Exactley, that's why there is no reason use oil from the 70's. Synthetic FTW!
