The plastic housing is fine. The only reason it would ever be an issue is if someone tightens it WELL beyond just a light snug. The o-ring does the sealing. No reason to torque down on the housing.

The plastic housing is what caused all the problems when dealing with the camry. It had been rounded off over the years and the wrench couldn't get a solid grip on it.

That's because someone was trying to use a regular filter wrench on it. You need a "TOY 640" wrench to do it right. Use this and the housing will last forever. In fact, whether you have the plastic or metal housing you should use this wrench. They only cost $12-$15.

That "someone" would be the stupid mechanics at shops. The camry is not my car and I wouldn't have let something like that happen but none the less, aluminum is better than plastic.

I understand. The wrong wrench and/or over-tightening are to 2 reasons for failure. Combined....they can lead to a rounded off housing.

It's called making changes to reduce environmental impact. Less shit going into the landfills and less energy needed to produce the part. Its actually progress in spite of the fact many don't want to take responsibility for their own consumption. Yeah, I'd suggest anyone intimidated by changing a cartridge type filer should be taking their truck to someone for oil changes anyway.

I have about 20 oils changes with this style under my belt since it is on the 4Runner. Anyone with a little mechanical know how will have it figured out in 2 minutes. To me, it's not that big of a deal and so what if you get a little dirty changing the oil yourself. I hear chicks dig it.

It's not so-much "backwards" engineering as much as it is "coming full circle". Vehicles in the '30's through the '60's had cartridge oil filters. And a bit more recently, the 2.5 Iron Duke that GM put in nearly everything at some point from the early '80's to the '90's used a cartridge. Spin on filters were a trickle-down from the racing industry.

Don't make a big deal out of this. If you can remove a spin-on filter you can change a cartridge filter. The only difference between the 2 is that you'll need to install either 1 or 2 o-rings depending which Toyota engine you're working on......in this case 2 o-rings since it's the 2GR engine....and that's only if you decide to use the the drain plug on the housing. Some people don't and just remove the housing and dump the oil and filter into their catch-pan, eliminating the need to change the smaller o-ring. In fact, some applications, where the housing is mounted sideways don't even have the drain plug. The only reason the 2GR does is because the housing points downward.

x2 ^^^ Don't try the cheap 65mm filter wrench from the local parts store, I know it's close but it doesn't really work at all. Worth it to invest in the 64mm that Jane pictured.

Asked the dealer if they sold such a wrench, they do, but they wanted $90+tax for it. It wasn't even gold plated, wtf

    Wow!

I think I paid $13 for mine. But that was a few years ago. Even so....you can still get them for under $20 from Amazon.

I had a GM car with that 2.5 Iron Duke. Messiest oil change ever ... no drain plug, just a large cover that let loose all the oil at once, when removed.

So far since, have avoided purchasing any vehicle that used a cartridge filter.

Toyota has been using this cartridge filter on their 2GR-FE V6 ever since it was released. The wife used to own an 07 RAV4 V6 and the filter housing was aluminum, filter was located underneath the vehicle beside the oil pan. Actually it looked exactly like the one to the left on the pic, probably the exact same part number even. Changing the oil required a few extra steps compared to the spin on type filter but still easy to do, just take your time. I always bought the OEM Toyota cartridges which came with the filter element and a couple of o rings.

Not the fact that it's an oil cartridge but the only two problems I see with this is...1.) its location on the engine. Toyota should have put it's position somewhere on top/front of the engine..and...2.) that plastic housing part, we all know that over a period of time plastic has a tendency to crack, etc. and as some have already pointed out dealing with similar plastic housings that the area where the tool is to grab starts to round off.
Good thing that there is a way to switch out the plastic housing part with an aluminum part.

I performed about 20 oil changes on my 4Runner in her 80k miles and never once did I round the edges or notice any cracking on the plastic housing. On the contrary, the aluminum drain bolt started to round out inside the 3/8".

The right tool (TOY 640) and only snugging it a bit when your tightening it and you'll do no damage to the plastic housing. It will last forever. This is not new to Toyota. It's only new to you gen-3 Taco guys. ;)

People...you're making a MUCH bigger deal out of this than it really is. Between family, friends, neighbors and my own vehicles....I'd say I have about 100 oil changes on various Toyota engines over the years using the cartridge filter system. Not once have I ever had any trouble in any way with any of them....Camrys, RAV4s, Prius, a couple of Avalons and a Sienna thrown in as well. Honestly....getting the spin-on filter off of my 2.7L Taco engine was messier than any cartridge I've changed.
