Headlight replacement bulb

This probably been covered but cant find anything to my specific question. I would like more light out of my high beams on my 2014 DC trd off road and have found a german company that produces a stock H-4 replacement bulb but its rated 55w/100w. It meets or exceeds all standards in europe but was wondering with the 100w rating will I have to upgrade anything on my taco. And yes I know I'm being naughty by installing it because U.S. standards are only 55/60 but I rarely use my high beams except while traveling on the interstate. thanks for any info.

 

Its hard to tell with the info you posted. Most of my lights have been replaced with LEDs. There as long as the lumen out put is higher and amps it draws is equal or lower I'm ok.

 

Pulling a few more amps and it will get hotter than stock.

 

You run significant risk of damaging your electrical by melting your wires. You need to get a stand alone headlight electrical harness to bypass the factory system. In addition to heavy gauge wiring to handle the current, and drawing power directly from the battery bypassing the factory switches, they will use ceramic connectors to prevent melting.

Do you want more light on your low beams? I personally like the Orsam hyper 85/80w H4s. They produce significantly more light than stock on both high and low beam, and have better bulb life than 100w bulbs. They also won't be quite as hot which is better for your headlight assembly.

Running brighter halogens on the OEM lens is better for oncoming drivers than putting an improper HID retrofit in there that scatters light into the eyes of oncoming drivers because the optics are all wrong.

 

The piaa H4 bulbs are much brighter on low and hi. They also have a cleaner white light output. I've had them for a while and definitley wouldn't go back to regular halogens.

While they may seem brighter, a standard wattage bulbs will not compare to a performance high wattage bulb.

Any bulb with a colored lens to make the light output 'whiter' is actually filtering out part of the lighting spectrum and producing less usable light. The Orsams I mentioned above have no coating.

 

The PIAA are definitely brighter than the factory bulbs. They also project light out further than factory. It's not even comparable.

 

I use the Piaa NightTech and they are much better then stock not as white as their hyper whiter/super white but too white and things get 'washed' out.

I will say this. Changing the bulbs in this truck is a PITA. Lol. Removing my grill and then removing the chrome surround from my grill to paint it was easier. They must have 5 year olds or adults with very small hands put the bulbs in these trucks.

 

Long ago, I had Cibie sealed-beam replacements in my '87 Supra. I switched over to 100 W bulbs and saw little difference except the light quality got yellow-ish. Didn't burn the wiring, but the increased power pulled nearly double the current and reduced the voltage at the bulb (Ohms law). The reduced voltage prevented me from getting the full 100 W and produced the yellow light. Re-wiring with heavier wire would have been the solution.

 

I am looking for a white light to match the new Fog LEDs. Are the Osrams white? I really don't want the blueish look. Also are they drop in?

 

They are whiter, but they do not have a color filter coating, so they are not a blue/white. I'll have pics up in a couple days.

Edit. If you run the 85w they are a drop in but should be run with a standalone harness. There is a lower 75w version that would be easier on the factory wiring.

FYI.... the 2nd gens are all relayed. there is a huge relay (labeled DIM) that controls high or low beams, and another one (HEAD) that feeds power to the DIM relay. NO significant power runs through the stalk.

Good to know, even so the heavier wiring from a standalone harness will reduce voltage drop which will increase light output.

 

True, but even at 100w the stock harness is pretty beef for the headlights. Id be surprised if you made a harness and got maybe more than .2v better.

 

You guys are crazy. The stock setup can easily handle 1.21 gigawatts of electricty.

The Voltage to the headlights is constant provided by battery. Unless you added something to reduce the voltage.
