You have an immobilzer in the vehicle. Look on the metal of the key right where it meets the black handle. It will either have a O or a G

They can cut you a blank to get into the truck if you locked the keys in, but that key wont start the vehicle.

I leave a spare hidden in a magnetic box.

You can have a good locksmith make you a spare including programming the G chip. It is not as cheap as a non chipped key but a locksmith will be less expensive than the dealer.
Places like hardware stores, Walmart and Home Depot normally will not copy a coded chipped key. Some kind of liability because there are a few high end modern cars that will lock up the ignition system requiring a tow to the dealer if a non chipped key is used to try to start the car.

Doesn't have to be a locksmith. If you purchased a chipped key (G or O depending on your vehicle) and can access your vehicle's Key Registration Utility, you can add the new key to your vehicle's register after authenticating with a mast key. I think taco's can store 5 unique keys within the registry. Write-up I did here when I purchased one of neneago's keys: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/neneagos-all-in-one-remote-key-review.349407/

Edit: I'm sure this may be too techie for some, just pointing out there are DIY alternatives to a locksmith/dealer.

Yeah, just inquired before buying Neneago's keys. Basic cost of key and fob at dealership with programming would be $180-$200 at stealership. Cutting and programming though, $50 for the half hour of labor so I'll have them do two keys. Ends up being about $75 a key/fob which isn't terrible...

    Cheers

I had a couple made at the dealer I bought my 2015 from since they offered me a discount on purchases and took it to my local dealer that I get it serviced at and they programmed them for free at the first 5K.
