It's designed that way. ARB has put a lot into how their bumpers hold up to damage and protect the vehicle. The mounting brackets are made with impact absorption in mind so the impact force to trigger the airbags is as close to what the stock bumper offers. In an animal impact the left and right sides are designed to push the animal up and away or down and away from the cab. While some people may not like the look of them they serve a function.

Personally, I won't buy anything but a ARB bar. When I do get back into a Tacoma (preferably an '01-'04) it's getting an ARB.

I like the design of it over the 4Runner one. Doesn't look like a damn landing craft with the panels

I can see where they had to cut the bumper like you do on the 4Runners.

I agree completely, they kept the bumper design sleek and uniform without making it WAY too big (i.e. '12+ Taco, 5th Gen 4R etc.)

I love my ARB bumper, just need to notch it and add some beefy shackle mounts to it (soon).

I really like this bumper on the 3rd gen. Looks much better than the stock grill/bumper/valence. It actually look a lot like a 2012+ now if you aren't paying attention.
