Found some more examples. Dealers seem to be choosing their own locations, including drilling the lower bumper:

I notice you are from Toronto...that explains it. You are delusional. You like the cold and you think the Leafs will win the Stanley Cup this year...next year...any year.

Drilling the bumper is Toyota Canada's official location. Dealers think it's a bit ridiculous, so they've been putting it in the grille area instead.

    Ah, thanks. I agree.

Talked to Valley Toyota today, they put it in the grille area, which is what I was hoping for.

Being born and raised in Michigan, I have never had or much seen block heaters other than on 2 ton snow plows and some diesels. IMO they are for people who do not understand what anti-freeze is.

I am all about being kind to my ride but it seems unnecessary, at least for here.

In Michigan we have another name for block heaters, they are called garages. Although it has been balmy come winter time as of late. :(

The words of someone who knows noting of what he speaks. You may have been born in Michigan but not sure what you have learned since then. I don`t suppose it has ever occurred to you that keeping your rad from freezing is of little use if your engine oil s so stiff it won't let the battery (now working at less than 10% due to the fact it is all but frozen) turn the engine over to get it started or that due to circumstance the vehicle is parked outside. Nah, I doubt many in North Western Michigan think block heaters are called garages and most here know what anti- freeze is and what it is used for. By the sounds of it you don`t.

    Take Care

I do know very little, I will never say that I know anything. That is why I am here. =D

Grandma's car got ruined by a guy from the South who put just put water in the engine, could be why I think this.
Never had a problem with any of my Toyotas starting in sub zero temps.

Fresh to the place just trying to interact. Thanks!

Block heater is more about reducing engine wear during extreme cold starts rather than starting. Most engine wear occurs during cold starts. A warmer engine = less wear. The 0W20 synthetic oil spec'd for the 2016 helps with this issue.

Whether a car starts or not is more of a battery health and battery heater issue.

Well confirmed with a buddy of mine that they are still pretty much a waste of money both block and battery heaters. At least in lower MI.
At least we operate on the premise that if it starts, battery is good, if not you need a new one. Lol. I'm sure it's not easy on the truck, but it's a taco.

Posting pics of buddies taco collection soon. Hopefully.

The start is not a logical premise "... A buddy of mine ..." However, ...
We know that during start-up we experience the most wear - due to reduced lubrication flow. If engine turns to fires up is secondary. How much wear occurred before fire up or full lubrication? Oil that will flow well during cold start scenarios will help reduce engine wear. That being oil with good cold flow properties or warming the oil/ block first - your call. My bet is a combo of both in some scenarios.

The only vehicle I ever owned that started after a month of -30 to -50F when not plugged in was a 1970 VW Beatle one winter in Ft. Simpson, NWT. With a wind blowing and -40F it is just to hard on a vehicle to not have it plugged in. I normally would not bother but once in awhile it is just to hard on the engine not to plug the vehicle in. Back in the day Dad would sometimes bring the battery into the house when we lived in Edmonton. Besides the truck will warm up quicker when you plug it in overnight...I hate the cold!

It depends how long you want your engine to last. If you are trading it in after 60k miles, you might not care. My 2nd Gen is still running at 399k miles and gets plugged in when it gets much below 0 F. Will be doing the same with the 3rd Gen now at 1.5k miles.

Man you had me going for a minute until I realized you were quoting F. I thought New Mexico ...-29C and then I saw the F. So much easier on your engine. Nicer too when your vehicle warms up. The fellow above has never lived in an area where it really gets cold. although Minnesota is not exactly in the sun belt. :D

Got my Taco on Friday and the Block Heater entry os on the bumper, if anyone still thinks what is there is a bumper, and I find it quite convenient where it is. Perfect spot and the enclosed extension cord works perfect beside the house outlet. I know the days I really need it will be few up here by the coast but anytine it is below freezing I think I will have the truck plugged in. Less wear on the engine when cold starting.
