You don't even really need carpet and there is a certain dynamic to it such as what kind of subs and how much air space in needed to optimize output I'll see if @manethon can preach on the subject he knows what he's talking about

Awesome. No rush. I dont have a sub at the moment but will eventually be building a level platform for the back of my access cab. I was thinking maybe I could integrate a downward facing sub in it.

I have never made one but studied the way systems are made and matched and the way certain boxes are created it's an art form just do your research

HA yeah I know, my brand new tires are chewed up a bit, but that's the price I pay for fun. It was a blast, and yes, a few challenging spots..heh. Lets plan the next one!!

Carpet is purely aesthetic, and i personally don't like a carpet box. Sand it smooth, toss some primer on and cover with rocker guard or similar product.
If you have the time and the patience, Glassing can be fun and rewarding but really Will only come into play if there is a dire need for it. There are currently more than enough woofers on the market to choose from to avoid using glass.

With that said, build your entire box out of 1/2 birch ply. Buy a broom stick length wooden dowl about 1 inch thick(don't use a broom stick) and use that as bracing @ 1/3 the box width interval. So you will have 2 braces. 1/2 birch ply is just as strong as 3/4 mdf, you can some airspace, is easier to work with and lighter. The latter isn't as important as the difference in weight is rather small.

Next, airspace..... Manufactorer may recommend .75 cf sealed for airspace as an example. You only listen to scooter, techno, trance, electro, there is not much need for low end bass extension and you can benefit from a faster response and higher peak in the upper freq of the subs output range. With that said, you can then build a box thats about .5cf. Now, lets say you like rap, R&b and other music that has low freq bass and kick drums, you can benefit from pushing that .75 to 1cf or taking the .75 and adding increments of stuffing to the box to lower the F3. These are user determined aspects and 1 box doesnt always please the entire audience.

Now if we go to ported, same concept apply but now there is port length, port tuning and port area that will come into play. Im not going to get into this as there are quite a few relationships that need to be discussed
