I'm here to clarify what a remote key is. I posted another thread and assumed people knew what a remote key is... oh..was I wrong.

Picture below shows the two separate components inside a remote key.

    Transponder Chip: Starts engine
    Remote: Controls doors lock, unlock.

Remote portion can be program by anyone by following a few simple steps. This is called OBP(On board programming).
Toyota keeps removing OBP on its newer models. I did OBP on a 2012 Tacoma and it worked fine. Im not sure if it will work on 2013+ models.

Key blade can be cut by anyone with a key cutter, Hardware store, locksmith..etc.

    Transponder Chip...

Do I have a transponder chip in my key?
Look at your key blade and look for a "o" dot engraved on the blade or a "G".
This indicates what chip you have inside.
If your key has nothing engraved and you can start vehicle with a simple metal key, you do NOT have an immobilizer system. NO chip

Do I need to program the chip inside the remote key?
Yes if the key has a blank chip.
No if your cutting open one of your already programmed keys and transferring the chip into the remote key.
*Warning* Very high risk of breaking chip if you cut your key open. If you do plan on transferring your own already programmed chip.
Tell seller NOT to put a blank chip in slot. Pain in the ass to get out.

My vehicle does have immobilizer system and I want a new blank chip, how do I program it to start my vehicle?
You will require a locksmith or dealer to program the blank transponder chip to your car.
Some equipment out there sold on ebay can do it. I do not suggest using this fake Chinese equipment to program. Do it at your own risk.

If I do take my key for a locksmith to program, how much will it cost?
Price varies. I have seen quotes for cutting the key and programming transponder chip for as low as $20 to about $80

Please ask questions in this thread and I will try to answer them as quick as possible.
