With only 6 miles on the ODO, that many specs should be acceptable?

    Hello All,

This is not rust. It is simply the copper shielding from the MIG wire when the frame was welded together. The electro deposition (anti corrosion coating) does not attach to a non ferrous metal. Nothing to worry about.

Might not be acceptable but evidently on a 2016 Tacoma it's normal.

It looks a bit flat to be 3 dimensional welding splatter. I call rust. Looks the same as the rust on my frame.

    Soon 2016's, soon.

That video is pure awesome. Love my truck, but this is a well known Tacoma issue that many of us just choose not to talk about or think about, a betting man says the 16s in 10 years will be facing the same hurtles, still an origami frame design and prone to same issues. All gens at least have one thing in common ;)

I'm no welding expert, but I'm inclined to agree with jjbell83, it looks like some kind of manifestation from the welding process, I've never seen gold-colored rust before.

I saw the exact same thing on my frame when I was underneath spraying undercoating oil. From a distance it looks like it could be rust but if you look close, and I did, it is much more luminous than rust, more like copper as was said above. Not saying it isn't rust, and I'm not an expert on rust, but from 6 inches it looks much brighter than rust.

As much as I hate to say it, Toyota can no longer make a truck frame that doesn't have corrosion issues. Whether it's the steel alloy or the coating or both I don't know but they are decades behind everyone else and they still can't get it right.

If I was Toyota, I'd start galvanizing every truck frame I made because I think that's the only coating Toyota might be able to do right to mitigate rust issues. Their frame paint is atrocious as is their prep and clean work before it's dipped.

I'm keeping my 18 year old Chevy truck for a winter ride simply because the frame is still solid as heck and around here, you'll never see a Toyota pickup 15 years old that has been used year round that doesn't have a frame replacement. Most just don't exist anymore.

I will say this, it's not just a Tacoma issue, I have seen late 2000 decade Tundras so rusty frame wise [bodies are perfectly fine] that they look as if they came off the Titanic and that includes the Toyota dealer lot.

It's one reason I won't buy a used Toyota truck, unless you are super proactive on rust prevention, they will have severe frame corrosion issues sooner rather then later.

If it's spatter from welding why is it not covered by the protective coating that was put on the frame after it was welded together?

The excuse is that the paint will not stick to the splatter

Oh, I see. So 2016 Tacomas will get reframed in 2021.
