Lot of 2nd gens with the same spots on and around welds.. everybody says its rust.

3rd gen with the same spots on and around welds.. no, it's not rust.

I don't want to insinuate that the third gen superiority complex is wrong.. but shit only flows one direction, and second gen owners with these spots on their trucks have seen with their eyes, up close and personal, that it isn't normal and is rust.

The welds are usually the most suseptable to rusting as the heat pretty much eliminates any protective coating the original metal had. After that, it's just a touch of spray paint. Don't expect any more rust then you would have around the welds of any truck. I would expect the hardened steel itself to be less suseptable but the welds to be no different. It's up to the buyer to treat those areas. I have accepted that in all my vehicles for many years and have no rust problems since. It's a yearly maintence...we just have to deal with it in high rust areas.

I may not have the right terminology. But I stand by my assertion that IS NOT rust. It's a clearly a shiny, copper color.

It's rust. When I took the photos, especially the second one, the angle of the flash made the left side brighter than the right side.

It concerned me because the 2016 4Runner and 2016 Land Cruiser there did not have rust spots at all. I know they are built in Japan, and looks like the quality control gap between those and the Tacoma is massive.

I have those same spots on my '15 and I can tell you for certain that what I see on my truck is not rust. My '13 was the same way. Copper colored areas....but no rust.

Dog friendly, with dog snot on inside windows, with of course a/c! Mag 16 inch wheels from a Mazda.
Wonder if it's a special type of cheap paint that only sticks to medal? Reminds me of the old Citroen 2CV cars 70 years ago, the frames were prone to rust. Owners would spray a wax/oil sealant on the the frame. Then it got to the point of just replacing it with a galvanized one. Hay da-j-voo! We've gone a complete 180 on this one! aalindsey.biginside.jpg

Well it should not be. Does anyone know who makes the Toyota frames in the US? I doubt Toyota has a frame plant. American workers can make quality products...it is not genetics or race, but that doesn't mean American workers do make quality products either. Management of companies have a lot to do with the end product consumers receive but so do the workers.

Without knowing the history of the "Show" truck it is not possible to draw much in the way of conclusions. The mileage means nothing as the 6 miles might well be all accumulated being loaded and unloaded off a hauler since last January and God only knows ehere it has been.

I dunno....I don't care if this thing was stored in a salt mine and sprayed with water everyday from build date to auto show date. If it's rust (which the OP seems convinced of) then this is inexcuseable. If its rusting out now, then what is it going to look like in 5 or 10 years?

Was a Toyota rep there with the truck? You should've asked or brought it up with them!

They may have a legitimate answer as to what it actually is or can find out for you (and us).

Maybe worse or maybe just the same. It does look like rust though, but you should care IF you intend to buy a Tacoma. It wasn't an issue three days ago and now the sky is falling. Some guys either have existing Tacomas they want to hang on to for various reasons, others don't have the money to buy a new one and still others just don't like Toyota. Seems to me most of the folks buying the 2016 are pretty happy they did. Picking my new TRD Sport up at 1:30 this afternoon and no I won't be looking under the truck for rust on the welds.

Ummmm, I would. Would you not want to know or do you just want to keep your head in the sand? My 2010 has rust. If I would have looked under the truck in 2010 when I bought it I would have denied the sale. I didn't look....

Keep in mind, in 2010 Toyota said they cleared up the rust issue.
