We stayed at fall creek falls the first night. Then headed up to Big south fork and saw Angel Falls over look and twin arches and camped out and did some light wheeling. Stayed at hotel in Knoxville last night and went get some awesome burgers and bourbon at Stock and Barrel. Headed to Gatlinburg today and then going to the Smokeys. Going to hike up to Mount Le Conte and go check out Clingmans dome. Headed home tomorrow unfortunately.... Trips always fly by so fast.

 

Was the waterfall big at fall creek? Sometimes the pond at the bottom is deep enough to jump off the waterfall into and sometimes it's too shallow to even swim in

 

That's the winch I have. I suggest taking the gears apart and cleaning out the grease that's in there and putting in some good high temp stuff. Mobil 1 or Amsoil or something similar. It really smooths up the operation of it. Besides that mine has worked great for 3 years now and the waterproofing design of it seems to be legit

Make sure you pack some warm gear for the top. There are a couple ways up there so start really early as this is a very rocky trip up depending on which trail you take. It's on my bucket list to do. I want to stay at the camp at the top.

 

Seems like a solid idea, but I gotta ask, did you have some sort of problem that led to this repacking or just distrust in the Chinese? I had this same thought. The Chinaman is not the issue here, just their known shortcuts in the manufacturing process.

 

I had problems with the gears. I went through three planetary sets. Once I got the right one I repackaged it and have not had problems since. Except melting the insulation off the cables in a hard winch. I have since put new cables on.

Just picked up some goodies from Levi

 

I didn't have any of the problems Kurt is referring to, possibly because I swapped grease before it ever went on my truck. I never buy anything without doing a gazillion hours of research on it and I found that people who talk shit about that winch are just people who have something else and want it to be the best and everything else to suck. What I also found was that they use cheap grease which causes clunky operation when shifting between fwd/free/rev and also causes excessive heat which leads to premature wear. People who changed out the grease experienced little to no clunky operation or excessive heat, as has been my exact experience. Sounds exactly like any other mechanically operated machine, it works with cheap lube but works awesome with the good stuff
