I'm an owner of a 3rd gen and really like the truck other than the automatic transmission. I brought this up on other threads and thought I would ask here. Anybody else's transmission shifting all over the place? Very annoying and can't use the cruise because it makes it much worse. Toyota tells me its normal. I'm actually heading to a gm dealer in a few minutes to take one of the twins for a drive. Maybe I'm being petty, but I just can't take the constant gear hunting

Mine seems to not shift as bad as what's reported here. Cruise works ok for me. I don't have hills around me, but several bridges that have inclines. It stays in gear up bridges into the wind... good luck though, maybe you'll find something that fits your needs better

First 100 miles I was a little worried about the trans, seemed to be always bogged down. After learning how to drive the truck could not be happier. Higher RPM for more spirited driving, lower RPM for frugal driving.

OK that gives me hope. I read some people are totally fine with their transmission...maybe I will try a different dealer. I read the 2nd Gen had tranny growing pains as well

It's pure irony that a child who got access to a computer trolls a forum and then tell sensible forum users to "grow up".

From the way he speaks, he certainly sounds like BlueT's half-sister.

Make sure you take it on the Interstate. You will be amazed at how much more stable it feels compared to a Taco. Tracks very straight and seems unaffected by wind, 18 wheelers etc. My Taco is very squirrely. Haven't driven a 2016 so maybe its better, but since its basically the same truck I can't see that it will be much better.

Drove my truck during thanksgiving up to around 90 on highway to see how stable it was... I had no issues felt nice and planted to the road, my mum couldn't tell I was going so fast. The truck takes bumps pretty well.

The new GM Twins are decent Trucks but they are not Tacoma in any way. The reliability will not be there in the long run. I just sold my 2007 F-150 and bought a new Tacoma TRD OR, AC. Fits better in the garage and definitely gets better mpg. The F-150 was great but I did not need a full-size truck. My nephew bought it and loves it. My new Tacoma is outstanding in every way. All this talk about constant shifting is surprising since I have not had that at all. First tank of gas resulted in 21.3 mpg. Not bad for a 4wd OR V6. In the end it just comes down to personal preference, yet the Tacoma is much better as a Truck, not a car in disguise. Have a great day all!

I am actually researching the 'Twins' and will eventually test drive all 3.

So far.... I've discovered they have an Auto 4WD feature where the transfer case transfers power to the front when it senses slippage in rear( via shaft speed sensors). That's interesting...

I've also discovered they're having frame rust issues, but it's not anything GM or Chevy is doing to correct it. Almost like its a new problem that's come up. They dip their frames in a wax coating - apparently this coating is peeling off.

I've registered on 355 forum but they never 'approve' my registration so I can't post anything. My email had been deleted twice and I've registered a couple different times. WTF? Seems like I'm getting the brush-off.
I'm registered on Coloradofans from a long time ago but it won't send me an email to reset my password. Again, brush off? We're talking weeks and weeks have gone by. Not happy with that experience.
Anyone have any feedback? Do I really look like a spam account? I've never had such a hard time getting on a forum EVER.

355 is a joke. I had the same issue. coloradofans is much more active for the new platform if you want to do research. Just make a new account. Hadn't seen anything about the frame rust issue on the twins

The Colorado does not have the auto 4wd feature you talk about, the GMC Canyon does. They use different transfer cases. For hard core off roaring I'd recommend getting a truck that is either in or out of 4wd. With the auto 4wd t-case even when in 4 hi the truck will still slip rear wheel then send power to front.
For my use I like the auto setting for winter driving, use it a lot.

That is good you keep an open mind, I am the same way. Even though GM has won out many times I still checked the other brands as this day in age vehicles are much better built and more reliable than 15 years ago.

With that said I haven't seen anything about frame rust on the GM twins, are you confusing those and the Tacoma? That is what I have read frame rust issues with...

The Colorado actually does but it is only on the diesel, if you want a gasser with auto it has to be the GMC Canyon.

That is not true, when it is in 4 hi it is locked in 4 wheel, there isn't a wait for spin and apply power, that only happens in the auto setting (that is the same on all truck makers with auto 4 wheel such as Ford and Ram). Once you put it in 4 hi it is locked 50-50 front rear.

That being said if I was strictly looking for an off road truck to mod and trail regularly I would choose the Tacoma OR. If I need a truck to tow, haul, DD and still do the occasional trail run or fire roads to view some scenic areas or hunt the GM twins would be the choice. They are nearly as capable in the rough stuff but better on the road and with truck duties. They also are more willing to deal.

Either way both are great trucks with slightly different capabilities that tend to overlap in their design, you really can't go wrong with either.

You are wrong, look into it. I own and have owned a few truck with this style transfer case. Even in 4 hi my rear wheels will chirp when backing in my garage, and I am sure I'm not spinning the front wheels on he driveway....
There is a YouTube video showing what I mean, just can't find it right now

I have a 04 Jeep GC that has a 4 full time setting for driving on dry pavement...similar to the auto setting on the Canyon. It can be driven this way because the center diff (transfer case) isn't locking the front and rear axles together which allows them to turn at different speeds thru turns, etc...The power split is 60-40 in this setting...higher value to the rear axle.

In 4 part time (high) the center diff locks the axles together and should only be used off road or in conditions that will allow the tires to slip in the event of a turn. The power split is 50/50. If you do engage this and try to turn on dry pavement you will get wheel hop and drive line binding which can break things.

Based on what you are saying you should be able to drive in 4hi anytime which isn't the case. Go out and put your truck in 4hi on dry pavement and try turning around in a parking lot and see what happens.

Auto and 4hi are totally different. 4hi locks the front and back together...auto does not.

In 4 hi the front and rear are locked and power is split 50-50. In auto 4wd, the front is locked, but power is only shifted via a clutch when slippage is detected.

Try test driving a canyon on dry pavement in both auto 4wd and 4wd hi (which you shouldn't really do in 4 hi) and you will notice a big difference when turning.
