Posted this the other day in the same type thread but I'll post it again. I've only used Shell 93 octane since the truck had 16 miles on the odometer. Shell (at least locally) is the only fuel station that I can find non-ethanol fuel but it only comes in 93 octane. That said... even though it says no ethanol on the pump I've really no way of knowing.

A few years ago "Fifth Gear" did a comparison between the cheapest grocery market fuel you could buy all the way up to the most expensive Exxon / Shell / etc.. fuel you could get. Granted they were doing it more for HP gains and not MPG (not that, that matters) but the difference was a 8 hp gain in the 93 octane. I really don't care about the HP or MPG gain but it makes me "feel" better running 93 in mine so as long as I can afford it that's what I'll use. It certainly isn't going to hurt anything. 87 octane is just fine for our trucks. Do not go below that or run E85

I am convinced that the truck runs better on 93 than regular 87 and I have proof. This was confirmed by having my girlfriend fill the truck up on 3 separate occasions with either 93 or 87 and I guessed correctly which fuel it was filled up with each time (blind test). I can tell by off-idle throttle response/pull and also how the transmission tends to downshift from 5th to 4th when using 87 but doesn't do it as frequently when using 93 and stays in the higher gear because it has more power/runs stronger. Flame me all you want because I don't care what everyone else thinks as I witnessed it personally.

I have always used 91 since having turbo cars. everyone says its so expensive until you tell them overall you are talking a $7 difference between 85 for a full fill up. another reason is I bought a used audi and it was having major issues with the gas varnishing from sitting, added the BG44 gold and ran 91 in it only and the injectors were flawless. more boom=more zoom

Normal 87 unleaded, just like the owner's manual of my truck recommends.

87 because it makes the most sense for normal driving.

If I'm on a long drive running the engine really hard I will use 91 or 93 or when it gets noisy and the pings and ticks show up.

I do think is runs much better on higher octane, and is better overall for the engine just not very sensible unless your budget allows for the extra cost.

I suppose a significant part of what I am wondering is regarding ethanol vs. no ethanol more than octane rating. My 2004 gen 1 ran noticeably better using gasoline that had no ethanol in it.
