Happy Monday morning, ugh. 31 degrees here with sleet and snow, forecast is 3-6 inches with a nice ice base already down. Supposed to warm up later in the week though.

Probably gonna grab a rescue pup as a companion to our well bred Lab bird dog.
Love my 20 month old retriever like the air I breathe, but I'll admit she has been a pita to raise and train.
    Costly too.
I've heard many times, the purer bred dogs can be pita. Whereas a rescue mut can be easy. :notsure:

 evening gang!!! :woot: for rescue pups. Annie is one and Zoie is a purebred choco lab. They were both pretty easy to train. When I was looking for Zoie - I couldn't find a rescue choco lab, so found a breeder :anonymous: Next dog will be a benji type smallish mutt from the pound. Wrangling these 65 & 80 lb dogs is getting to be too much :anonymous:

I had just lost my yellow girl (avatar pic pup) and had to have a choco lab. Had had yellow, had black (mix), needed choco. couldn't do yellow again :(. She's a field bred lab and the laziest dog in the world!! Won't retrieve, but she's a great cuddler when you need one. Will only chase squirrels and other small animals :anonymous:

But she's still a puppy. Labs are puppies for like 3-4 years. LoL.

Zoie does not like it. She won't go through the doggie door or pee with it on. She probably would rip it, if she wasn't so well behaved. She's 4 1/2 now. Chloe is cute

I really need to put some time into a reply for this, been a heck of a day though. Just a quick note, and I will come back with more detail later if you want, but a truly good hunting dog is a handful to train. In fact the better a hunter they are the more they are to handle. I joke that I hunt Tollers instead of Labs because I like my dogs and women both a little bit naughty. But there is a lot of truth in that statement and it is complex.

My Ex Wife came back from the grocery store in Asheville NC with a half springer and half beagle mix many years ago. Was a heck of a family dog for 17 years but really wasn't a hunter. I built brush piles for rabbits to live and breed all around the property after I moved here to give her something to chase. I miss her baying and running even if the neighbors didn't care for it LOL. My oldest son has her collar after she passed away, putting her down was one of the hardest things I have ever done. And I waited too long, never will do that again but she was the family dog and meant a lot to me and the boys.

Most grouse hunters use Setters and they are not AKC registered for show, most are FDSB registered. From the first Midwest Upland Journal Shoot where I was the chief cook and bottle washer.

But when you get to SD and pheasant hunting most are labs. For a reason, and many are choco's. One of my first traditional SD pheasant hunts with a group of people from all over the Country on a private farm. The four of us Ret. Military were asked in for the hunt because we drop birds when we shoot and they were falling behind on limits.

My Lab has been pro trained for basic obiediance. And I work her daily. It takes more patience then marriage. :D

She goes back in January for 3 months of retriever training. I honestly do not have the time or skills to do the job right.

I will mostly quail and dove hunt her. Because they are the prevailing birds in my area. Some farms have pheasant.
I'll also duck hunt her. We have wood duck that roost near the big ponds. And we have divers in the bay and bayou close to shore.

She'll never be a master or senior, but if she can steady and retrieve on command, I'll be perfectly fine with that. Because she is primarily my companion and house pet.

Wasn't my intention to get a hunting Lab. But she was a gift and her lineage is hunters. She needs a job and wants to work/hunt/please. And my trainer says she is a perfect canidate.
