    Hi Folks,

I'm a new member of Tacoma World and I hope someone can give me some advice or direction on my question.

I have the check engine light on. I plugged it in and the code came up Knock Sensor. Either the sensor/sensors are bad or a rodent chewed through the knock sensor wiring harness. The dealership confirmed this. Also, I do know what's involved in the repair (including pulling the intake manifolds).

My question is; the dealer says it will be 18.5 shop hours plus parts to fix it. Seems that's an insane amount of time and resulting cost.

Additionally; A friend accessed "All Data" for me and it said shop time is 9 hours to replace one and it also comes up that it is 18 hours to replace both. When you tear down the Truck both sensors are close together and accessible but All Data adds the additional 9 hours to take it apart a second time. Is the dealership doubling up on the labor time as well? I've also checked other sites and some folks say it is only a 3 or 4 hour job.

Thank you again for any help!

    Sincerely, Tom Gentile )

you are not out of the powertrain warranty are you? (5yr 60k miles?) that is a motor part and is covered under warranty.

The knock sensors are buried pretty deep.... service manual states you have to remove the heads of the motor... but i think you could get away with just remove the lower intake to expose the valley of the motor.

    Hi,

No.... I'm not out of warranty. If it's covered under warranty I don't care what the dealership charges Toyota. As Jimmy says... Animal damage is not covered. If it turns out to be animal damage (and it will probably will be); that's why I'm really concerned about the shop hours (18.5) and paying out of my Social Security Check.

    Thank You!
    Sincerely, Tom

    Hi Tacoma Mike,

Yes.... They said that if it was animal damage it was NOT covered!

My dealer quoted just about the same. Look up what needs to be done to get to the sensors, top of the engine needs to come off. Check with your insurance company, they covered half of my bill.

    Hi 08Taco,

Yep.... I know that the top of the engine needs to come off and all of the other stuff. I am planning to go through the insurance company if it's not covered under warranty. I'm still wondering if the dealer quote for labor hours is way off base. Thank You for your time and input!

    Sincerely, Tom

Almost passed out when the service manager told it to me over the phone. Good luck with your insurance company.

I didn't search yet but there is a thread showing how to avoid removing everything and patch the wire rather than replace the harness.
