Baldwin oil filter VS Toyota

So I'm sort of a stickler on what parts I put on my truck, and I try to put mostly original parts when I can. I've been running Toyota filters on it since I bought it and I was wondering if switching over to baldwin would be worth my while. Any input or experience with the baldwin brand would be great.

 

I just remember I always used Baldwin filters be it fuel or oil on my 1994 Dodge 3/4 ton truck w/ the straight six Cummins Diesel engine. It was recommended over any other filter from my diesel mechanic buddy who said they were top of the line. I have never used one on my Tacoma though.

 

Just use OEM, it it really worth saving 50 cents four times a year?

When it comes to oil filters (just like motor oil) go with whatever makes you feel better and avoid the really cheapy cheapy ones like the Fram orange cans of death. There's only about 4 companies that make oil filters now and the same goes for motor oil. The days of separate mom and pop shops in that industry are long gone. Toyota oil filters are rebadged Denso filters, Toyota doesn't make their own oil, filters, antifreeze, ATF or any of their gear lubes at all so you don't really know what you're getting with their stuff. I'm sure most of it's just fine but I personally go with brands I know best that have a long standing reputation and good track record. I've gone back and forth between Wix and Purolator filters on my vehicles and never had a oil or filter related problem at all with any of them, just keep up on maintenance and you'll be fine with whatever you use.

 

Baldwin are perfectly good filters

 

Baldwin were the go to filters years ago I have no clue about now.

Have they followed the others to have filters built as cheap as possible.

I use Toyota or Wix

 

I've never used fram... not even on my first beater I owned it was always purolator or Napa. I have noticed on these filters I get from the dealer is that they say made in the USA?... I wonder if denso has a subcontract with someone because all the others I see are made in Taiwan

 

I've used all brands of filters on my vehicles and never had problems. since I bought about a dozen Toyota filters a few years ago for a good price I haven't used different. there will always be possibilities of failure in any brand. just less in the top quality, but always possible. as stated keep up on the maintenance, don't abuse it and it should be fine and last awhile.

 

Send one to @chris4x4 and have him tear it open for you. That'll answer your questions. Search "oil filter comparison" and look at his thread. Even the "oversize" filters don't have as much filter media as OEM.

baldwin and wix make filters with 98+% filtering efficiency. those are the premium filters youll find at places like NAPA or Carquest/Advance Auto Parts. not autozone, oreillys, or pep boys.

ac delco, motorcraft, fram and those other "oe" filters only have about 94% filtering efficiency. wouldn't recommend them. this is true with most filters bought from domestic dealers.

purolator makes filters that do 94, 98, and 99+% efficiency. you have to make sure your getting their premiums if you want good filtration.

K&N and mobil 1 filters are always 99+% filtering efficiency.

denso filters im not sure about their filtering efficiency. i would hope it's 98+. either way it's a good quality filter.

Not exactly sure, but it's definitely not uncommon for them to be subcontracted in different areas. Last time I heard they were made in Thailand, but that was a couple years back.

 

I usually reuse my oil filters 2 or 3 times after running them through the dishwasher. Thats ok right?

Agree with most of what you are saying, however the filters Denso makes for Toyota are constructed differently than those Denso makes for the aftermarket. Could be a matter of patents or the need to cater to multiple car makes and models.

I've never actually seen a factory filter cut open, that's definitely different and unique looking to say the least! Never seen a media quite like that before.

 

Dealership is just to out of the way and the truck shop down the road stocks them.
