Thanks for your replies. I also emailed Bob last night and he said the same thing and mentioned that the temp reading would probably rise when the truck isn't moving. That makes sense though I don't recall any of the other cars I've had with a temp sensor doing that. Anyway, todays the day I hope to finish the job. I live in a place that can get cold and icy and not having being able to monitor the outside temp is not a good thing.

There's a vertical bracket behind the grille, in the middle left-to-right, and it's several inches from the radiator. That's the spot for the sensor. Airflow is pulled through the radiator by the fan so I doubt you'll see much ambient change when sitting still, unless things get really heat soaked.

Whether it's direct sun or not, you will notice a higher than outside temp just after you start the engine (being parked for a few minutes after driving) and then get moving. The sensor is picking up heat, no matter what. I've been parked in direct sun 75° heat for hours and when getting in the truck it says 90°, but after moving for a few minutes it drops to the correct temp. You need to have air flowing by the sensor for it to be accurate.

I attached the sensor to the vertical bar in front of the radiator about a year ago. After driving the truck and parking it, the temp gauge is usually higher than the ambient temperature due to the engine compartment temperatures. The temp gauge quickly adjusts while driving it and remains accurate for the duration of the trip. Even when stopped and idling the temp gauge appears accurate. I guess that's due to the fan drawing in air across the sensor and the radiator behind it. I thought about moving the sensor further away from the radiator, but it's really not a problem where it's mounted.

Don't worry. I just came back over the Sierra's and mine went from ICE to 1° on the mirror. :) However, it was a "dry cold".

Could someone give me bobs contact info please? Should I be emailing him or contacting him via a thread on the forum? Thanks. I can't wait to get an auto-dim in my '14.

Best way to contact Bob is Bob's Automotive Mirrors & More LLC email is rearviewmirrors@csinet.net.
He gets back to you usually within 24 hours. My autodim/compass/temp mirror is on the way.

So when I install my mirror (without temp sensor), does the 14-pin connector extend out from under the headliner and plug into the mirror? Or does the plug from the mirror go up under the headliner to attach to the 14-pin connector? I don't have my mirror yet. Just curious. Anyone have a pic of that connection?

If someone is looking for a cheaper alternative than Bob's Mirrors any 99- 2006 Sierra/Silverado will have the auto dimming, compass and temp mirror. It's actually identical to the one that Bob is selling although used. I paid $ 25 bucks ( 20 for the mirror and 5 for the sensor) and it looks like new. Wiring was easy, just find power and ground in the overhead console connector then run your wires to the front for the temp probe.

So it has the same mount as the Tacoma?

When I installed mine (from Bob - great vendor) I ran the mirror wires up under the headliner and plugged them in. With the overhead console removed the headliner was easy to pull down just enough to get the connector in, then a plastic cover that comes with mirror goes over the wires. Mine also is model without temp sensor and took all of 10 minutes to install.

I just installed the mirror kit Bob sells with the Auto dim, compass, temp. I put this in my 2014 Tacoma sport. Works like a charm.
    Thanks Bob!

To attach the sensor I used a thread insert tool from harbor freight. I used and existing hole near the temp sending unit already mounted in front of the radiator. It made for a very easy install. The 10 -24 insert fits perfect in the existing hole. No drilling required. I also trimmed the tab off the sensor bracket to make it fit flush.
This is a very useful tool, I have used it for many hard to get at areas.

Me too! Installed the Gentex 177 (used) from Bob. Only took about 1 1/2 hours. Thanks Bob!

FYI In my '14 double cab, the harness is hot even without the keys in the ignition. I know this because the garage door opener integrated in the mirror still functions without keys in the ignition.

If I recall correctly the harness has both 12V hot and 12V ignition. The auto dimming mirror is 12V ignition and the homelink is 12V hot. I added a dash cam to the 12V ignition without issue.
