If you don't have any check engine light on, then you're ok. From what I understand, this emission system runs when the engine is cold. To fool the ECM to run richer, in order to heat the catalytic converter to burn the exhaust fumes quicker. After turnning the engine off, it helps burn off exhaust fumes. If you're out of warranty, before it goes bad suggest getting a by-pass kit, it'll save you a lot of money and headaches. https://hewitt-tech.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=7

That bypass kit says only up to 2007. Is that just not updated or is there nothing for 2008 and up models?

It's best to contact them. I just found out they're offering air injection pumps. As these trucks/cars get older there's bigger market for selling replacement parts.

Okay. I don't have any problems with my truck now, but you never know what'll happen in the future.

Toyota like all manufacturers have designed some flaws into their vehicles. This gets them to sell not only new cars but also parts that fail and service to install it. If you have time suggest to take a look at the top plastic cap of that air injection pump. The one torx screw located on top, right in the middle, unscrew it. There's a small cheap block of foam (it's the filter) hopefully it hasn't come apart due to age. When it does come apart it'll get sucked into the impeller, burning up the motor. In which it'll be a $1,000 for a new one, and if you think of not pay attention to it after it fails. It can cause a engine fire or the engine to go into a limp mode until fixed. The dealership normally wants to change out two parts, the valve and pump which runs well over $2,000 for 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder is over $3,000. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3Zoc2eqxqo

So, trying to determine what parts are needed for this repair. Mine is currently at valve stuck closed. Is this the valve? [IMG]

    I would assume so.

Has anyone tried pouring seafoam in the hose and letting the pump blast seafoam into the valves to decrease carbon build up? I saw some bmw and porsche guys attempting this.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
My truck has only ever shown this po2440 code twice. Both times after restarting the engine hot after a short shut off time (like maybe 3-4 minutes) I wonder if the engine coolant temp sensor might have something to do with it...not sure. Again only twice in 5 plus years and stays off after clearing the code.

Did you disconnect the battery, to clear the codes? Suggest when you finally fix everything purchase this by pass kit so your system won't fail in the future. https://www.hewitt-tech.com/store/

Not knowing what country you're in sugest to look at your owners manual and check you emissions warranty time/KM. Then call your Dealership Service Dept, inform them of the code. Hopefully they'll set up an appointment and cover it under warrenty work. It's about $2,000 for the repair to be done from the dealer. You buying the parts from an online part store and doing the work about $200. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/secondary-air-injection-system-p2440-and-p2442.370792/

One time I removed the intake system to change spark plugs and forgot to reconnect one of the very small vacuum tubes (1/4" I think) and it threw a P2440 code. Might be a good idea to check those connections.

Truck is 10 yrs old now, never had any issues with the air injection system.

My truck just graced me on the way home this evening with 2440 and 2442. Valve stuck open again, last time I was at 32k when it happened. Took it to dealer, they tested system and cleared code all is well they said. Now here I am at 53k same codes, I cleared them 3 times on my scan gauge on the way home so far. Now it doesn't seem to be coming back, fingers crossed.

Well no such luck for me, truck keeps popping the codes and going into limp mode. Have you guys been able to have this covered under the powertrain warranty or should I not even waste my time with the dealer? I did take it in for the same issue when I was under the 3/36k warranty so maybe that will help me out since it was documented as an issue.

You could try, but if I had to guess. It's now on your dime $2000!

Seems crazy to me that it wouldn't be covered under powertrain or emission warranty. I'm hoping since I had the issue before and its documented that they will take care of it. I just stopped by the dealer and they cant look at it until thrusday..so in the meantime I have to keep driving this thing around in limp mode holding up traffic. If they make it fall on my dime ill trade the truck off before I go sending 2k on it, unbelievably a truck with 53k is riding around in limp mode with a problem Toyota knows about but wont help us out on. Fingers crossed for Thursdays appt. I will keep you guys updated.
