What did you drive before your Tacoma?

What were you driving before, and why did switch to a Tacoma?2007 Xterra. Bought it brand new. First major break down at 2k miles. Down hill from there. It had so many problems we were able to get Nissan to extend the power train and drive train warranties to 100k. I had 85 and older Toyota's that I put millions(not really a million) of miles on and off road.

 

I had a Ford Ranger. I had it for 3 years and about 40,000 miles. I loved it. No big issues. A few small warranty items. But then the Tacoma is now 14 years old and no issues at all. Mainly sold the Ranger because it was a single cab and the family was growing.

 

I had a manual toyota yaris hatchback in speedway blue. It was kitted out with roof rack and a wired trailer hitch, so it was somewhat functional, given that my commute is about 50km (30mi) each way. Some days I miss it, but that's only in underground parking lots and at the pump. I finally decided to trade it in after the umpteenth time I couldn't make it to a camping spot due to ground clearance and traction issues. It was a good car. When I started shopping around, I was originally looking at rav4s, but then I test drove the taco... Oops!

 

There was a point where I towed a dirt bike trailer with two dirt bikes behind that old yaris! It handled it surprisingly well, I just wasn't going or stopping anywhere fast.

 

97 saturn sl2, 87 f150 2wd, 2001 Rav4, 1990 volvo 240, and 1989 Crown Vic wagon. Switched because I was tired of working on all my other junk every day.

I had a 00 S10 ext cab 2wd with the 4.3l 5sp that I bought new. It had 238k on it. The only real problem I had, besides inferior aftermarket fuel pumps (3 of them) was a cold start problem that took 5 winters to track down to a faulty ignition switch. I was rear ended last September and the truck totaled. I have owned Toyotas in the past and knew how reliable they are, so I decided on a 4x4 Taco as a replacement. I do have to say that the 4.3 was a smoother motor than this 3.4, but I can live with that.

Had a 90 Mustang, with the baby 2.3L. My dad loaned it to his friend, (Dad's name was on it, because I was still young) who blew it up, literally. It meant a lot to me, because it used to belong to my grandmother. When she passed, I was the only one willing to put the work into it to get it running again. I spent so much time in that car as a kid. It was kinda like seeing your childhood die.

Then Dad and I shared this 91 Honda Civic DX. Great little car, got rear ended a couple years back by an idiot lady who was so scared of the two cops rolling past with their lights and sirens on that she failed to see the Honda sitting in the turn lane and plowed into it. It's still sitting in my back yard. Bought it back despite the fact that it was totalled. It was literally a month to the day after the accident that the wrecker dropped it off. Me and dad grabbed some pry bars and pulled the metal off the back wheels and drove it around the block. Started right up, despite having sat in that lot for a month. I don't think I have any pics from before the accident, but it was a pretty clean little car. Stock as hell.


I was never really looking for a Tacoma, I just happened to be on craigslist and saw mine listed for $250, claimed it had a blown head, which turned out to be a popped freeze plug. Best $250 I ever spent! I'm definitely a Toyota man for life.

The Tacoma replaced a '98 GMC Sonoma SLS RC 4cyl auto with 145k. I was the 2nd and 4th owner. It was in good order mechanically, all safety items functional and fresh. Cosmetically challenged from some budget bodywork after a slight fender bender with the original owner......... and looming wiring issue underhood from squirrel damage. 'Patched' would be a reasonable description of the repair. However, only the cruise control didn't work anymore.

I gave it to a fella in need of transportation who had enough funds to get insurance and the registry work. 15 months later and he's still rolling it with no issues. Having that transportation was life changing for him, so I'm glad I could do that.

I switched to a Tacoma (bought a '13 in '15, 8.5k on it) because the last of the Rangers ('11) that had the supercab with the opening rear doors were only available in the 4.0, and I wanted a 4. Not to mention they were hard to find in low mile examples, and I was looking for a 20 year ride.

I briefly looked for 1st gen Tacomas, and after a few weeks realized that the combo I wanted was rare and usually overpriced (by my standards) when available.

Had 30 vehicles before my 16 taco 4x4 DCSB, but the one I miss the most was my 2011 Mustang GT Premium, 5.0...man I loved that car and also my 69 firebird I restored years ago and sold in 2010..have the taco now and the wife's car is a 2016 Mazda 6i Touring, ...

 

Various high school beaters > '76 Bronco > '93 Toyota Pickup > '05 Tacoma > Current '17 Tacoma...

 

Had fun with this but didn't get to drive it as much as I would have liked

 

Honda Pilot (also the car I learned to drive in). Totally a soccer mom car, but it was reliable as hell and was surprisingly nimble for its size and refrigerator-like shape. I generally dislike SUVs, but I will always love the Pilot.
