Wait. Are you talking about just replacing the boot as Monte is suggesting? I dont see the value of that unless its just to avoid having to press the bj out of the spindle.

Getting the bj out of the a-arm was easy enough, it is the spindle that is challenging because the bj wants to flop around. That sucker is in there and no pitman puller is going to get it out.

 

Yea pressing the ball joint out is not fun. I used the rental ball joint press and some other devices to get them out. Was not fun. Worst part on my lt install really. Other then my steering rack.

Then getting the new one in without a shop press..not sure that's possible really..

 

I used one of these when I did my ball joints. Local parts store let me use it. Paid a deposit that was fully refunded when I returned it.

The one I rented didn't have adapters for the uniball. Was a total bitch.

 

Mine was tough too. It was one of the first real DIY projects I did on a vehicle other than oil changes etc. id like to think that if I had to do it again maybe it would be a little easier.

 

Personal experience i dont like the pitman pullers. Instead i use a small sledge (couple of pounds) and undo the nut so its flush with the end of the bolt then whack away. Although im not sure how do-able that is on the truck. Another thing you could try is jack the wheel up, shove a ratchet handle between the uca and spindle (if itll stay) then let it drop. Ive had that work perfectly before too

 

As I said earlier, getting the spindle along with the ubj out of the upper arm is the easy part. Getting the ubj out of the spindle is the challenge and has to happen even when you go to an aftermarket UCA with either a uniball design or a ball joint design.

 

Cut out some coupons and get yourself a HF press. Should come in at under $100 and you'll end up using it more than you think. I was easily able to remove my UBJs using it and my CV axle nut socket. Don't waste your time on a frustrating parts store c-clamp press.

 

Just finished the S.O.S. report! What a great story, it looked like you guys had a great time. I really have to get up there to explore those areas, the scenery looks breathtaking.

Well as long as it's a warm place to work. Getting to wrench on your toys can't be all that bad.

 

I have a sweet one that's sturdy and made of 2x4 and the top is a oak kitchen table. I have a small vice that I used lag bolts to a board bolted to the wall. So it's vertical. Since I only use it as a second set of hands most of the time.

 

yes is saw your old desk, i wouldnt say its that sturdy! ha. Having the BRZ in there also the tacoma used up all ur space.

 

Tell me about it. Bikes and shelving take up half of my garage and the truck barely fits in the other half due to the deep freeze and beer fridge
