Road Noise from rear cab vents..?

Let me begin by saying that I am seemingly fortunate in not having some issues that others on the forum have.

    1. NO = Coke Bottle Howling noise between 35-45 (I only notice it very rarely on crosswind. I plugged LCA's with plastic plugs I thought this might be related to the road noise, but no).

    2. NO =
    Unusual Vibration at certain RPM's

    3. NO = Hood vibration due to glue separation.

    BUT,
I do have an issue, that I have only seen a couple others mention. I seem to get an unusual amount of road noise. It sounds like perhaps a door is not fully shut (not the case), or noise from the tires (TRD_OR Goodyear Adventurers), not likely there either as they have a really mild looking thread.

Some research of the forums points to some 2nd gens having a road noise issue and many seem to think it comes from rear cab vents opening allowing outside road noise between the cab/bed enter the cab. Would be very interested in hearing if others have noticed this, and if there is a real fix..?

    Thanks.

I have a 2011 TRD Off Road Double Cab. It is by no means quiet. I just replaced tires and it helped. Having said that, I test drove a 2016 Double Cab TRD Off Road a couple of weeks ago. What I noticed is it was quieter than my 2011 but i noticed the majority of the noise in the cabin appeared to be coming from the rear. Seemed like the road noise via those rear vents. Back in my 2011 I had a bit more over all noise but did not notice as much from the rear. I think part of the issue is since the cab is quieter some noise that was previously masked is now being noticed but I am only guessing at this point.

Thanks for the reply. I made another thread a few weeks ago asking about tire noise, but most said their OR tires were quiet. I have been considering changing tires, and that is some time in the future (spring?). I'll see ir that helps. And, yes, it does sound like its coming from the rear of the cab. All door seals look ok. When the weather warms I'll look into taking the rear panel off and look at the vents and perhaps insulating. Must say, its my only issue and not that big a one.

Before I bought this Taco and read several on-line reviews and most mentioned how quiet the 2016 was in comparison to older models. It much louder than the 2014 Xterra I just came from. Therefore my concern..

My 2016 is louder then my 2006 was by far. I dynamated the doors floor and rear. What a world of difference it made. Now it's like driving my lexus.

You can also use seal and peel and it works equally as well.

I can GUARANTEE you have the "coke bottle" howl. You have the holes just like the rest of them. You just dont have as good of hearing as the rest, or you just dont notice it. lol

I searched long for the road noise fix. Only thing I found that seemed to work for people was dynomat.

If you have the fresh air vent on it will open up the cab vents. You can switch from fresh air and recirculate and notice a sound difference. The flaps in the vents are a bit flimsy, but are nessary so the doors will close. I put dyno mat insulation on back wall and floor it help some.

The vents are just made of a thin vinyl or some type of Material. That basically is the weakest link in any vehicle as far as sound deadening

    Thanks all.
Will take a look at the vents and do some insulating. Tried the recirc with no improvement.

I noticed allot of road noise with my truck also. I just figured it was normal for Toyota Tacoma's. Not going to do anything about mine, just grin and bear it.

There is no doubt it is road noise coming from the rear on my SR5 access cab. There is a much lower noise level when passing over new blacktop road sections from older ones with a lot of exposed gravel on the surface at the same speed. Sounds like running tires with an aggressive tread but mine are the Hankook Dynapro HT all seasons.

I found that the rear wall of the cab acts like a speaker and those 2 vents are really loosely fit.... If you seal around the vents and dyna mat or something on the rear wall... your noise will drop 50%..

    That's my experience....

If I could get to them without ripping the inside rear cab wall apart I would. I'm not mechanically inclined.

When the seats are up the are going to act as an insulator, your definitely going to hear more noise with them down

Thanks, that may be so, I''ll try it. But it should be quieter from the factory. Hard to believe that Toyota skimped on a few dollars of insulation. Disappointing on an other wise excellent vehicle..

You have to take in account with the new acoustic windshields and the extra dampening materials they have added to the gen 3 the weakest link is going to be those vents. Those actually look a little heavier duty then what have been in older vehicles. They also figure most of the time seats will be up and dampening most of the sound from that area. Unfortunately with the seats down the sound is able to penetrate more and bounce around inside the cab in a sense amplifying some of it
