This may apply more to the fabrication section, but figured armor = tire carrier.

In hunting for the ultimate solution to transporting a spare tire, I had originally intended to keep the spare in the bed, but once you pack the truck full of gear, the last thing you want to do is unload everything just to get the spare.

When I built the rear bumper for my truck, I built it to be really tight to the tailgate... like 1.5" protruding past the back, and it's not exactly a design that lends itself to adding a spindle.

Question is, has anyone used a product like this offered for Jeeps, that is simply a hitch-mount tire carrier, that pivots sideways (or to the back). I like the idea of pivoting down to the side, since that would allow access into the back in tight parking spaces, and sleeping in the bed without having to either close a swingout carrier, or having to deal with loading/unloading the tire.

Detours offers no written endorsement of max tire size, and I would imagine that having the pivot detracts from its stability somewhat.

I just jeep mine strapped to the inner bedside. Doesn't take up very much room that way. Just using a motorcycle strap to hold it and a cable lock to prevent theft.

I was looking at this same product, and I like the fact that it's smaller and lighter. I don't like the idea of adding 120-150lbs to the rear of the truck for a swinging tire carrier.

The best one out there in my opinion is the CBI Offroad one, and it's only 30lbs. and it's only a little bit more than the knucklebone... http://www.cbioffroadfab.com/products/trail-accessories/fold-down-tire-carrier-premium-model/
I like the CBI offroad products because they make lightweight options for almost everything
