Looking at that nipple for the fuel tank vent hose, I'm sure that can be repaired with epoxy and/or an adapter.

Are these tanks metal, plastic, or a composite?

Comp or plastic.... not metal though.

A couple of years ago, a member changed his tank for some reason. He cut it open and was very surprised at how clean it was inside.

My wife's 09 Honda had the check engine light come on 4 years ago. Got the same diagnosis. They replaced the entire fuel system and tank under warranty. I didn't ask why since I wasn't paying for it. But figured they wouldn't have done it for free if it didn't need being done.

That doesn't look bad to change. Looking at that though, it doesn't show anything on the male side of that connector being a separate piece. I guess that's why they want to change the tank. I'll find out soon enough. Just not exactly sure when. I am moving out of my house today and taking the family to Maryland. Gotta clean house tomorrow.

So I had this happen to me (with another vehicle, Jeep) (Yea, I got rid of it and got a Tacoma) The tanks are Composite / plastic, and some of the tubing connections are molded in. Break a connection and you scrap the whole tank. I am surprised there isn't an aftermarket kit for this kind of fix. Make sure they don't have to replace it for free. (part of the smog system) Dropping a tank isn't too bad, make sure you have disconnected everything so you don't snap another connection. If well de-greased, epoxy should do the trick. Sometimes I mix in a piece of cloth to improve the flex strength of the patch. Good Luck!

You might find an equivalent model year that has been in a front end accident and totaled. The tank might still be good.

Update, sort of....I dropped the tank and replaced the line recommended by the Toyota technician. Reset the light and don't have enough miles yet for it to come on again. Nothing looked out of the ordinary but I am not an EVAP tester so that leak probably still exists. I'm thinking if this does not work, the next step will be 3M 5200 around the fittings of the tank around the vapor line and the fuel fill line to eliminate that leakage. I don't think it's the fuel gasket around the fuel pump but I might do that one too. Till this weekend.

And the winner is......Blacktaco2042. My guess is a squirrel. I have a lot of them around my house. There are two distinct chew holes about an inch apart. There is plenty of room on top of the tank for a little rodent to sit and there's nothing around the hose to cause chaffing. I just cut the line and spliced a fuel line in and clamped each end. Tada.....No more check engine light. How I missed the holes the first tank drop is beyond me. It was clearly obvious when I dropped it the 2nd time.

Yea I have seen it a few times. It happens. At least you fixed it cheap and doesn't need a tank. Only time I had to replace a tank is cause a place drilled thru the tank mounting a in bed Salter unit
