They do generally hold their value pretty much everywhere. But I can speak to the fact that in Northern California, they are extremely popular. People who sell them frequently regret doing so (unless they used that money to buy a new one!), and though there are a lot of them people usually hold on to them for a long time.

Anyways I'm rambling. In some regions their popularity can tend to increase the value a bit.

I've noticed time of year too. When hunting season rolls around everyone wants one.

when i bought mine a couple of years ago one of my buddies from OR looked it up on KBB for his zip code and the price was quoted over $2k higher across the board for the same truck and package/accessories vs. what KBB had for it in my zip code... and yes they certainly hold their value -for good reason too- best reasonably sized truck out there IMHO.

20160105_150924.jpg I paid 9k for my 02 xtra cab. I looked everywhere for months for a 3.4l 5sp with e locker. Had 150k on it. Previous owner had it all bro'd out with spacers and blocks and all kinds of shenanigans. But the body and interior were immaculate and had zero rust and new tires.

Now it has 260k on the clock and looks way different :) still love it though! Price seems to be based solely on your location man. I recently replaced my clutch and carrier bearing but other than that its stock engine etc. Thing wont blow up!!

They definitely hold their value well but region defines what that value is.

I bought my 2001 DC 4x4 from my brother-in-law three years ago. It had been sitting for nearly two years.
Got the battery charged and it fired right up. Bought it for $3000.00. Just turned over 281,000. Valves rattle a bit sometimes but I'd still hop in and drive it across country tomorrow.

No it doesn't really matter what region your in. They do hold the values from what I've seen. Even above book value. Mine was $10,500 for a 2000, SR5, 4x4, 5spd, 109k mikes. Bought mine down south as Taco's in my area are way above book. Good luck.

3.5' lift in the front w/ Bilstein 5100 Shocks & Eibach Coils, 1.5' in the back with blocks & billies. Tinted windows. Tinted Tail-lights. Blacked out corner lights. Uws tool box. Whip Antenna. 2nd gen 16' wheels. Flowmaster 40 dual exhaust. 1.25' Wheel spacers all around.
I bought my 2003 prerunner with only 102k on it for $8500. I thought I got a really good deal at first, but then realized there was a lot wrong with the truck and the person I bought it from didn't take care of it

That said, should I have the valves adjusted as well? It seems a ok but...

Just a heads up, when it comes to these trucks; mileage isnt everything. Bought mine with 145k and it has all kinds of problems because the previous owner obviously didnt take care of this truck. Look em over reeaally good. Get a good test drive in as well. Maintenance records are a huge plus.

Amen!!! Know what your looking at or take it to a mechanic and not the mechanic of the guy who's selling it haha. The guy I purchased mine from had a huge inspection done on every part of the truck from the engine to the paint swirls to the body under the carpets.

i looked for a clean 1st gen tacoma several years while limping my old truck along because i wanted a low mileage truck but i ended up with one with more miles...
every one i took to my mechanic to inspect he would pull me inside and point out various tell-tales of poor repair or neglect to repair/repair properly... the one i ended up with had ben on the lot for 7 months before i bought it because (like me-at first) most people glanced at the odometer and passed it by without actually looking...

i looked at one really sharp looking truck in particular from the same lot with 103k - i took it to my mechanic and it wasn't 30 seconds before he pulled me inside and pointed out the snapped valve cover bolt and the brake rotor vents full of mud... it had ben washed and detailed so looked great on the outside even the frame looked good but once we poked around a bit a lot of little ''things'' started showing up.
one of the people i frequently run into around town ended up buying it and has had no end to problems with it ever since.
